My 92 Ranger SC 4wd with the 4.0 5spd has just recently started to momentarily cut out while driving. This has happened at any speed or gear from 1st to doing 70 on the I. It just cuts out for that second and then will trip the "check engine" lite. The lite will usually stay on for maybe a couple minutes and then go out until it bucks or cut out again. I bought a cheap code tester a long time ago that puts out beep and flashes in a sequence and then you have to look it up in the book but I just cant seem to get the right beeps written down to make any sense out it:bawling:! If any one has any hints on where to start please let me know. This has been a really reliable truck for me and has 170K on it but is still going good otherwise. Thanks:icon_thumby:

if you cant pull the codes, have someone else do it. without the codes we're just taking shots in the dark.

niether was your initial post.

they call it "on-board diagnostics" for a reason. without those codes, we have no idea what the computer is seeing or doing. im not into throwing parts at a vehicle in hopes that it fixes the problem. if thats what you want to do then by all means, have at it. i prefer to diagnose things properly so i only have to replace one part and save myself the frustration of guessing.

Then whats the point of even having a forum?? May as well just take the vehicles to the dealer right away and not even bother trying to fix something yourself. I dont know what happened to this web site but just this one post shows me it sure has changed. I joined many years ago when I got my truck and had a problem with what turned out to be a fuel press reg that alot of guys were glad to offer help and suggestions for finding the prob and fixing it. They just didnt blow me off and tell me to take it some where. Whatever!

"has just recently started to momentarily cut out while driving."

that is way to broad for anyone to speak to, to give any good advice. The PCM is already telling you where to start looking to diagnose the problem. once you get a code written down, then there is tons of help that can be given as to how to either directly change something out or how to further diagnose the problem.

it sounds like you know how to hook the reader up and get it to read the codes. all thats left is writing down the beeps as they come out and pay attention to the pauses as that will tell you when one set of numbers for a code is complete, and to begin a new set of numbers.

without that, no one here can give any help to such a broad problem. the best thing anyone could tell you based on "has just recently started to momentarily cut out while driving." is to check every single wiring harness, peice of wire, every componant under the hood for anything abnormal, every ground point on the truck...that could almost all be taken care of with the code the PCM is giving you.

The point of having a forum is to help pinpoint the problems one might encounter, and give advice on ways to fix it. But trying to diagnose something like that without codes, well, I hope you have deep pockets. You want us to tell you what your problem "might" be so you feel better about this place, change your fuel filter.

Danzo - dude,

The Sludge is a Ford Tech and he's offering his advice for free. If you give a service advisor a request like that it is the same as saying: "anything you tell me about this car I'm going to believe, including a ridiculously hight bill for your services."

Go to Autozone they will check codes for free and then get back to us.
