My ranger chirps when i start it up. Once it runs for a minute it goes away. I have replaced the ac compressor which was bad and squealed, idler pulley, tensioner pulley, and the belt. I cant exactly tell where its coming from. Sometimes it sounds like the engine, bellhousing, ive tried the wd 40 trick on the pullleys and bearings.... Its getting really annoying not to be a able to find a simple chirp. Its a 95 4x4 4.0 5 spd.

Put a bit of dielectric grease on the serp belt. Just enough to leave a film, no more. I've heard that will quiet a squeak with a vengeance. V-belt dressing is not supposed to be used on ribbed belts.

Have you spun each pulley separately to see what it sounds like?

Although if the sound goes away after a minute, then it may be something else.

Could be the syncro on the cam sensor. It has an oiled brass bearing in it and they chirp when they start wearing out. The 3.0 is really bad for that but I have seen the 4.0 do it too. I think mine is doing it right now actually.

Remove belt, from crank shaft, so nothing will spin, then start engine.
You can run the engine for a few minutes without water pump, it will not hurt anything, battery light will come on as well.

If no chirping with belt off then one of the accessory pulleys is the issue.

If you still have the chirp then it could be the Cam position synchronizer
I think they started using these on the 4.0l in 1995, they were a known issue in the 3.0ls
Here is a read on the 3.0l cam synchronizer :
http://www.therangerstation.com/tech_library/camshaft_position_sensor.html

It talks about the sound it may make prior to failing and how bad it can be if it does fail.

It could also be the throw out bearing in the clutch, clutch has to be dis-engaged to start engine, pedal in, so throw out bearing has load on it.
You could test this by putting trans in neutral<<<!!!!!
Then key on and jump start using 12volts to starter solenoid, so by-pass the safety switch on the clutch pedal, this will start the engine without the throwout bearing spinning under load.
If no chirp then throw out bearing is probably going out

My Zuki used to squeal if the battery was getting low for some reason. I thought that the alternator was putting a heavier load on the engine to try to bring up the voltage.

Reason I thought this was because this only happened when it was cold and only when I turned on the blower fan...if I let it run for a few minutes before turning on the blower fan it would not squeal...my Ranger also squeals when I turn on lights, blower, and wipers...if I shut all three down the squeal goes away...

So check your battery voltage both engine off, engine just started, and after engine has been running for a few minutes...you may see quite a difference.

I dont think it is my battery or throw out bearing. With clutch in or out in neutral or not it squeals. Ill try the belt trick to see if its the cam sensor bearing.

Fan clutch maybe? I know I've heard them squeak pretty nasty on some diesels.

When the water pump on my 4.0 was going out, it made a squealing/chirping sound.

I paid a little more attention to it today and it is coming from the back of the engine. Does anyone know where i can find the write up to do the cam syncro for the 4.0. Im kinda nervous about this one as i am terrified by the thought of messing up the timing and killing my motor. But im willing to do it if i can find a good write up with pics and such.
