Hey everyone. Right now I have 31/10.5/15 tires on the stock alluminum 15x7 rims on the early 90s rangers. I am going to purchase new tires and I wanted to know if 33/12.5 will mount up on they 7 inch wide rims ok or is 12.5 to wide?
thanks
Sean

I've seen it done before but it looks funny I don't think you will have any problems you might check out some 33x10.50x15s bfgoodrich offers them in both their mud and all terrain and you can run those on 15x7s no problem, what gears are you running?

I am running the stock gearing in a 89 ranger 4x4 with a 2.9l and 5 speed trans. What looks funny about the tires on 7 inch rims, do they just balloon out?
Sean

they balloon out. on top of that, you may or may not have tire wear problems from the tread being crowned.

the general sure of thumb is to keep your tire and rim widths within 2-3" of one another.

+1 Yup they balloon out, check the tag on your axle and find out what gears your running anything less than 4.10s will put unwanted stress on your trans and motor and you will go through clutches like crazy, I would be running 4.56s personaly

ive got 3.73s an iam running 33s on 15x8 wheels .. been working good since ive put them on.. only get 14.4 mpg on the hwy but hey thats besides the point.

For something that primary is driven on the street I wouldn’t run 12.50’s on 7” rims.

I have 35x12.50’s mounted on 7.5” steel rims, but my rig is a trail toy only so street driving is almost none existent. I prefer my setup as it allows me to run lower tire pressures for snow wheelin without popping beads all the time.

I checked the tags on my axle, they are 3 73 gears, will this not work with 33s. i want to still be ok on the highway without reving it to much at about 100-110km. what would you guys recommend

3.73s blow with 31s. 4.88s and 33s will put you at 2700 RPMs at 110km/h, perfect for a 2.9. You will need an 8.8 and D35 as 4.88s aren't made for the 7.5 or D28.

I personally would not run 12.5's on a 15X7 wheel, unless it was offroad only. I'm running 33x12.5's on 15X8 wheels and it is nice, but I wouldnt go narrower in that it sees 30 miles of pavment everyday.

And with regearing, I don't knwo how much differant the power would be with a 2.9, being that I've never driven one, but my 4.0L handles 33's on 3.73 just fine. Yes, it is alittle slower, and yes 4.10's, or even 4.56's would be nice, but so would 500 bucks to buy the things!! That and I get better highway milage with the 33's than I did the stock tires, and that is what all my miles are, so I see no reason to gear down other than offroad.

I'd say drive it with the larger tires and see how you like it, then decide on regearing if you see fit.

I run 31x10.50 with 3.73's goes just fine 120k home to work and back home 7 days aweek 24 mpg, 110kph at 2500 rmp

33's on 7" rims don't balloon out!! 33's on 10" rims balloon out.
But on 7" rims they will wear out the center of the tread.
