Just like it says, are 32 or 33's OK with 3.73's on a 4.0? Will I feel a significant decrease in power? I already only get 16-18mpg, is it going to drop a bunch if I go from 265/75/15's (30.65 inches tall) to a little taller tire?

I'm sure somebody has done this, I'm just curious if it's worth looking for that size of tires. Maybe I'll just get 31's instead.

John (railman) has 32's on his truck and also has the 4.0L (96 ranger), auto, and 373's...If he don't see this thread PM him for an answer...I think he still gets about 15 or so mpg and plenty of power, he tows a 24ft camper trailer to Turkey Bay with it...

You can run the 32' easier then the 33's with 3:73 gear ratio. It is best to change gears. I run 33x12.5's and I run a 4:10. I get great milage on the highway and city combined, but....better on the highway!! You will feel a loss of power but not really too bad with the 4.0. If you had a 3.0 you would really feel the difference in power.
I ran my 33's for about 4-5 weeks before I got the gear set changed. I noticed that with my stock gear set while pulling the boat was sucky until I got the gear set changed. If you are not hauling a trailer or boat or heavy loads in the bed then don't worry about it until you really feel you need to change the gear set.

yes you will notice a decrease in power. Especially if its a manual. With 3.73s and 33s 4th and 5th gear were useless, and I did about 14 mpg. I changed to 4.56 gears, and it jumped back to 16-18 mpg, and I had a TON of power.

ive never seen any problems with 33's and 3.73s with a 5spd. if ur easy on the pedal ull actually get a little bit better mileage, but if u lay into it mileage will decrease signifigantly

It would work. But it's gonna come down to personal opinion. Bc I think and realized anything bigger than 30s with my 4.0 in the b2 I'm going 4.10s at least. My plan is 33's and 4.56's bc of the a4ld auto.. And it'll help me more in town than 4.10s will also. I drive more in town than on open road. Consider how you drive and where you drive.

I'm runnin 33" gy duratracs on my 4.0 5spd with 3.73's. I noticed a definite difference when i switch from 32" bfg AT's. I cruise on the highway at 1900rpm in 5th doin about 100kph and pretty much keep it in 4th up till i hit 100.

For actual use I'd recommend 32's. For looks, 33's.

I'm doing it with a 2.9 just fine. I know several running 33s with 3.73 and a 4.0. They don't have any problems either.

Everyone has a different definition of OK. For me it's HELL NO, especially with an auto. You need 4.56s.

Well, I definitely don't want to change the gears. If a taller tire is slightly noticeable, I can tolerate that. But if the thing won't even get into traffic, then there's no way in hell I'm changing. At that point, I'll just rock some 31's. I mainly just want to fill the fender wells a little better (when I level it) and raise it a smidgen with tires if I don't have to sink a bunch of money into gears and such.

Hell, maybe it won't even fit 33's just being leveled.

I ran 35's with 3.73's. I could use 5th on a straight road. Really didn't care about the gas mileage.

33x12.50s with 4.10 gears with a 4.0 sucks IMO. 3.73s would probably worse. I'm sure it contributed to my transmission's ailing condition.

I've got 31's and 3.55 gears in an Explorer and it's fine. It's a little tall, but still has plenty of power, and will light up the tires from a roll by just stomping on it in 1st (manual tranny.)

i sold a friend of mine some 35" ground hawgs ha ran for a long time on his 93 exploder sport, 4.0 auto, 3.27 gears, he could easily run highway speeds and have power no problem
