My credo
Coming in second just makes you the first loser!
I’ve been looking for a shop to paint my truck and it’s proven difficult to find a shop that will do a complete paint job! They all say there is more money in doing insurance work. However, I found a shop today that does restoration work and they told me it would be about $30k!!! That’s crazy! The guy I spoke with said that materials have skyrocketed and materials alone would be $12-$15k. I watch a lot of these car shows where they flip cars in like a week or two. I know the timeline is unrealistic but they are selling the cars for like $30-$50k! How is that possible if just a simple repaint cost $30k? I’m ready to just buy a gallon of Rustoleum paint and shoot it myself! I don’t need it to be mirror perfect!

30k?!

I think they blew you a line of shit because they didnt wanna mess with it.

Yeah, that’s what I’m thinking. They do custom restorations and probably didn’t want to mess with my common ol’ Ranger. I’m gonna keep looking and try Macco.

Yeah... sounds like the classic "I don't want to do it" price.

That being said.... a properly done paint job isn't even close to cheap. It's a shit ton of work... a shit ton of work before a speck of paint even gets mixed lol.

It's all relative. Painting a car that already has the body work done and is in fresh clean primer should not cost 30k... if they're dealing with a rust bucket that gets turned into a show car, 30k might be a starting point. Are they disassembling it? Painting the frame/bottom of the cab/engine bay/door jams or just a quick tape & spray job? Some people don't want to deal with it at all if it's not a complete job, I know you say you'd be happy with a "good" paint job but that probably means minor dust, runs, etc... someone comes in asking for "good" and then it's a problem when they get what they paid for.

I could see $30k for a super bangin paint job. If they did a full dissassembly and prep work to the max... along with some awesome pearl paint. Porsche has a $30k paint option.

I bought a gallon of paint from an automotive paint supplier to paint a piece of equipment in my shop. It was $500 just for a gallon of paint, no primer or hardener or anything. Probably got charged a bit extra as a walk in, but I can't say how much.

There is an insane amount of labor in repainting something. A lot of stripping sanding and blah blah blah.

Nothing wrong with a rustoleum paint job. I painted a truck with a paint brush in rustoleum and it came out pretty good, and it I put some work into sanding it to get it real smooth it would have look even better. That was a work truck, a beater, so it was actually a feature to be able to touch up any paint scratches by just hitting it with a brush out of a can.

I had mine painted for $11,000.00 with some important body work done. They did a very good job too. They took it half apart; took the bed off, doors, fenders, removed the glass.

My only regret was that I should have painted the frame first.

You can paint it yourself if you want. Eastwood has got two part catalyzed spray paints in rattle cans. You might spend $400 just for the top coats, but the difference is almost negligible if you are willing to sand and wet sand again and again.

I did this to a friend's Ranger.

I believe that a fresh coat of paint on the top and bottom is the most important upgrade for your truck.

I did this to a friend's Eanger.
I saw a video of a guy painting with some no-buff rattle cans. He did a front quarter panel. It took like 8 cans and many coats and was in the $hundreds, but it looked nice in the video and he said it was impressive.

You get a much better job if it’s all disassembled.

All I see is a security window asking me to type the letters I see in a box. It feels suspicious.
Huh. Shows up right on my screen. I edited the post with the link on the bottom. It's just a neat video of robots painting a BMW.

Yeah. It’s pretty cool. Here is the one from the plant where I work. I’m a maintenance tech in the paint shop here. So this is my paint booth.

Well, my link is doing the same thing yours did. If you go to YouTube and search “bmw paint Spartanburg” it comes up.
