I have a line on a 1997 V8 Explorer, and was curious if there were any reason not to use that engine/harness for my swap into my 95 ranger. Or if there would be major complications based on that either.

Also figured I'd ask if there were anything else I should make sure to get besides the accessories, harness, radiator, and of course the engine.

Read a lot of threads, but couldn't help but double check in case I forgot, or missed something along the way.

Thanks a lot for the help, as always!

Haha. Guess I should have mentioned, I already have an explorer 8.8 installed.

97 is OBDII.
95 is OBD1/EECIV.

Not sure what that entails for swapping. Plus wont a 97 exploder have PATS?

Also, if the 97 has the 4.0 SOHC (i think 97 was first year for it) you dont really want it anyways.

Are you sure Rangers and Explorers didn't go to EEC-V in '95? I wouldn't swear to it, but that was my recollection.

A '97 will not have PATS.

If it's a '97 V8 Explorer as the OP said, it's unlikely to have a 4.0 V6 installed.

Fullsizes hung on until after '97 because Ford knew there was big redesigns coming down the pipe.

I think most everything else switched in '95.

Shit. You are correct on that fact. Talk about a brain fart.

Not totally correct. The 250HD and 350 kept EEC IV untill 97. The 1/2 ton and LD 250s had OBDII in 96. My 96 150 with a 300 was OBD II.

Here is the break-down of EEC-IV vs OBDII:

The EPA said everything had to be OBDII by 1996 model year. This came out right as Ford redesigned the 3/4 ton and larger trucks, and they wouldn't be due for overhaul again until the 1998 model year.

Ford cut a deal with EPA. They would get their 1/2 tons over for 96. They would get cars and 1/4 tons over on their overhaul schedule (all of them coming over by 1995). In exchange they were allowed to keep the 3/4 ton trucks EEC-IV until the 98s came out.

So in the early 90s you can find all sorts of oddball stuff if you know where to look. I have seen 95 MY Rangers built in mid to late 94 with both the OBDII connection under the dash, and an EEC-IV diag port, listed at EEC Diag, under the hood, next to the ABS one.

I have also seen a 94 Thunderbird with the same arrangement, except the OBDII port was in the glove box where it belongs (per ASE the OBDII connection is no to be hidden, covered, in the way, or placed anywhere in the driver's foot well so that is findable, accessable, and does not pose a hazard while driving with a scan tool connected).

Ok, dad's '96 '250 is not OBD II, I figured the half tons would be the same... because they are pretty much the same. ;brownbag;

My 97 HD 250 is EEC IV. I like it that way. OBD II is to picky.

Crazy my 95 is OBD II but is a late 95

That's correct for a Ranger (or basically anything Ford that isn't a full size).

Im curious now about the one thing ford always bastarized....

The Econoline.

When did they all switch? Logic says they followed the Fseries, but is there possibly OBD II 351/460 econolines runnin around out there?

Well I learned a lot about obdI and ObdII, MY 95 has the obdII port next to the hood release. So there should be no issue there.

So no other sugguestions on things I might need/want? If not I can't wait to get into it. The ole 4cylinder with nearly 600k miles is due for an upgrade. :yahoo:
