302 Swap oil filter. Is there a short one that will fit on the block?

I've got an adapter but can't find proper hose. Heater hose won't work. I don't know if it's due to heat, pressure, or the oil chemically breaking down the hose or a combination of all those factors. I know there is hose out there to do this, but just try to find it on a weekend. What I'd really like to do is find a filter short enough to fit on the block and clear the steering box. I've never had a block mounted filter fail. My relocation hoses have failed twice in a week. If there isn't a filter short enough, I'm going to spring for braided steel with the appropriate fittings installed on the hose professionally. But I'd rather just go buy a short filter and be done with the jimmy rigging.

Use hydraulic hose and AN style fittings. Many parts houses make these up. Only problem now is screwing the fittings and hoses onto the block adapter with the engine in the truck. No filter available that'll clear the steering box.

What about the 90° adapter used on the 2.9/4.0l and the v8s in the E-series. Will that help.

I don't think it will. I have about a fingers worth of clearance between my adaptor and steering box, and it pretty much covers the whole length of the adaptor.

And in mine it would put it right in the middle of the power steering pump too.

How much clearance do you need? An FL300 was used on the 94 and 95 Cobra, and is about 1" shorter than an FL1A.

FL1A specs = 5.250" height; 3.812" inside diameter; 3/4-16" thread

FL300 specs = 4.281" height; 3.812" inside diameter; 3/4-16" thread

Thanks for the extremely quick response!

It's pretty much what I expected to hear, but I really appreciate hearing from you guys who have tried this. I've got a 90 degree hose adapter in place on the block already with the hoses aimed down and forward so I can get to those fittings easily. Now I just gotta find a place to make up hoses on a Sunday. I may look into that other adapter to. I've got a little more room than a finger. Previous owner who did the conversion has 1" blocks between the engine and mounts for oil pan clearance. Thanks again for all of your input:icon_cheers:

And they do make regular oil hose, oil will break down coolant hoses.

I didn't like how the stiff hydraulic hose fit so I went to oil hose and barb fittings. Rather than run a buch of angle fittings and nipples that loved to leak to get it to clear the head I ran it out the bottom and up by the radiator hose and then the stiff hose no longer pulled the adaptor loose. Hydraulic hose would have never made the bends. I figured it works for power steering, should work with this too.

Someday if I get ambitious I will crimp fittings on the regular rubber hose.

Nice, hopefully it works then! I'm curious, so please post back how it turns out.

That's about 2" of clearance. A PH16 clearly exceeds that, plus you have to figure another 3/4" of the threaded fitting sticking out of the block you have to also clear.

you can use two of the oem type adapters in certain situations.

dont put that shorty fram filter on anything you like.

get the hoses made, reg flare fittings one end and npt the other.

on reg npt end, spin them into the installed adapter. use the flare on filter end...usually what i do. cheap easy and strong.

The PH16 will not fit. I ran one for a couple years, as I placed my adapter in an odd position:

The Quaker State version is/was much shorter, but I believe they discontinued it, or my local distributor stopped stocking it. An original application is the '94/'95 Mustang Cobra, as they had an oil cooler.

The short filter works great on my buddy's 5.0 RX7, however.

Here's a shot during my build. You can see the silver filter adapter on the block, and the steering box.
