2wd vs 4wd

I buy 2wd trucks for a few reasons.

One i HATE the 4.0L V6
Two although we get plenty of snow up here in winter i have NEVER had an issue getting ANY of the 4 2wd pickups i have had around in the snow
And Three although i LOVE my truck its not my toy its a practical vehical used for dd purposes in the winter and utuility use in the summer i have a Motorcycle for fun.

^?????? Why hate the 4.0? Man that's just plain WRONG!!! My wifes Escape has a 3.0, and don't get me wrong it hauls butt for a 2wd, but the 4.0 is just SICK in a 4x4. Nothing like a 02 ext 4x4 with a 4.0, folks in my area want to hump the hot tail (pipe).
I don't use my 4x4 that much, but when I need it it's undeniably there!

What sucks is when your getting ready to jump off the Ant hill in Barstow in a 2wd and you have to wait 30 minutes for some guy in a 4wd to get out of the truck to lock the front hubs.......get back into the truck.......put on his seat belt...... stick his head out the window to "get the visual"..... spit out his chew......slowly start to crawl up the hill......steers to the right while slowly crawling up the hill........go back to the left....stops....spits out his chew again..... waits for the passenger to get out cuz he has to pee......gets back in the truck.....goes another 1ft...... hits a rock.....passenger gets back out again......looks at the rock.....says to the driver go back to the right.......goes another 1ft....passenger gets back in....goes another 12 ft to the top of the hill.....repeat steps above while going down the backside of the hill. Its like watching golf on TV in Spanish!!! Its boring and you cant understand it!

just to be a dick.....

i live in michigan. and yesterday the only patience to drive down the road i was on in a 2wd would have been waiting for a plow.


i guess it all depends on when you leave for work. 3-5 am is when i head out and generally am the first thru there if its snowing.

and type of snow is real real big factor too that needs to be considered. if the road is seasoned a 2wd can easily bust 15 inches of nice powder. on a hang up generally back out and hit er again.


in this crap i am takling about it wants to spin the jeep in a circle, but the ranger murders it no problem, even in 2wd till i get to 18 inch to 2 foot drifts.

now...if you were behind me you could get thru till the deep drifts with a 2wd ranger i am sure. a lifted 2wd on 33's would do real well. but not going first.


next big snow say, over 8 inches non windy... 5 inches windy... be in houghton lake around 3 am......you lead the way.


if you can do my route in a 2wd stock ranger i might just give you my ol jeep.

I have left early for work and school for years. I usually leave about 5:30. If its snowing I leave about a half hour early to give me some extra time if I run into accidents on the road or any other mishap. You live in Michigan as well so you know how winters are here. I have driven in some of the worst with an 67,81,90 and 91 mustang over the years. I survived all of them. Theres really only a few really bad snow days out of the year here in Michigan, so when I chose the 2wd ranger I knew I wouldnt have to many problems. I was right. I drove slowly and got out of some pretty deep snow easily. The trick is of course dont floor it. I even made it up my driveway pretty easy. Only once I had to shovel the plow stuff from the front of it. Its very handy to keep a shovel in the back. If I survived driving mustangs for 9 out of my 20 years of driving, I knew a Ranger 2wd would be a piece of cake.

oh..and i am cheating on the milage....its a diesel.

2wd in snow isnt so bad, driving skill helps as well as proper tires and weight balance. not being stupid will keep you out of most trouble.

From what I have read it seem like this is a futile fight. The one thing that gets me is people saying they have never been stuck in a 4x2 or a 4x4 for that matter while wheelin. If you have never been stuck THEN YOU HAVE NEVER BEEN WHEELIN.

i have an SASed ranger and i was having trouble on the ranch with a couple inches of rain. tho i had alterrains but i also have a locker in the front.

i have 20 plus winters too driving.....


the conditions i am refering too will not let a 2wd stock ranger pass. not too sure why that is hard to understand. but sooner or later the road gets plowed, or afte the shit ton of local 4x4's run down it... all is well


31 and 131 dont get shut down nearly as much as they used to. i have driven to work on closed roads several times a year back in the 90's and only once last year. last year i drove my car alot cause i was going from detroit to luther areas. getting stuck the last two miles before the rig on flat ground or even going downhill didnt do well for my blood pressure on 4.5 hr rides.


and i guess drifts up to the hood on my cherokee wont bother a 2wd stock car or pickup?


not buying that shit. two weeks ago i pulled alot of cars out going from durand to gibalter and it was real bad on 96 going back that night. all easily passable with a 2wd. some were in 4x4's stuck on the ice because they had the 4x4 in full time. i just put it in parttime and worked it and drove out. many of the cidiots were not in 4x4 at all...but ditched. i see that more then anything else when 4x4's are ditched. they were in 2wd before they ditched. driving like idiots i am sure is more cause then not.



so, in civilization.


4x4 is not necessary at all. just wait for the road crews if its too ugly out. if you get stuck on some wet grass, call a tow truck.



and dar 70....i really want to see you drive the back side of vogel when theres 2 foot drifts out in a stock 2wd ranger with 5-8 inches of base and an inch of ice on the asphalt. its only happened about 6 times this season so really its rare, but thats one less paycheck when the rest of my bills are sky high from the -20 stretches.

Again Im not saying a 4x2 wont get stuck or any other vehicle for that matter. Im sure it will happen to me eventually. But if you drive carefully and are prepared it will be few and far between. Again if I get stuck I have a whole bed in back that can carry a shovel. It only takes a few minutes to dig out your tires. I have driven in the worst possible conditions as well. I have driven on all the days we have had snow before plows this year except 1 day with zero problems. As I stated above I drove mustangs in the heaviest snows we have had, BEFORE plows get to it. Back in 99 we had a huge snowfall. Well over 12". My stang got stuck twice. I came prepared. I brought a shovel. I floated over the unplowed roads pretty easily. When I got stuck it was on a turn. Got to work and didnt lose a paycheck. I have never called in to work or missed college due to heavy snows. It just patience and preparedness.

Out of 12 months in the year we get maybe 5-10 bad snow days. Thats what i based my decision on with getting a 4x2. I just couldnt justify the extra cash for buying the 4x4 as well as extra insurance money and extra gas expenditures and upkeep.

yes you can accomplish alot with a good driver and good 2wd but you can acomplish more with a 4wd

its not to say 2wds arent fun but...
