2wd vs 4wd

Yeah if you can afford the gas thats great.:headbang: If I didnt have so much driving to do, and gas was 99cents a gallon again I could deal with the 4x4 with bigger engine.:D But as it stands I get up to 27mpg on mine and about 24 avg. Thats at least 140 miles more per tank (going by 24mpg)and 3.5 trips more to work on one tank of gas.

afford the gas? gas is only 1.70 that aint that bad at all. if i can afford gas from a job makin 6.70 an hour i think most anyone should beable to make enuff moneis to afford gas.

depending on the terrain determines whats best. 2wd is great for haulin ass in the desert. 4wd can slow you down especiall in turns cuz it pulls u in the turn but with 2wd you have more control in loose sand. just dont stop or else ur screwed.

other than dirt and sand, i prefer 4wd.

yea in 2 wheel drive you usually burry it to the axle if you stop. helps if your running a wider tire in sand or air down too. my buddy had 33''x12.50''s on his yukon and you could stop and sand and start to go and not even spin a tire. now with my old ranger with the 30x9.50s i could stop and try to move again in 2wd and burry it.

Gas was 99 cents a gallon for years. Once 2000 rolled around we have been $1.20 or more. I remember people complaining back than. Here in Michigan $1.79 is the cheapest you will find. YES its cheap compared to last year, but I guarantee you, when it hits $2.00 again this summer people will start bitching. Its not going to stay cheaper and people who are out buying gas guzzlers because of the cheaper gas right now are foolish.
Just because gas is a little cheaper right now doesnt mean I want to use more or spend more on it. I want to continue to save. I get over 100 more miles a tank on my 4x2 than a 4x4. Thats at least $10 I save per tank at current gas prices. Thats about a $520 savings a year or more. When it hits $4 again I will save $1040 per year over a 4x4 driver. That adds up especially when you have a mortgage due.

I have a 3.0L 4x4 and average 20mpg in winter (warm-ups and winter fuel) and 22-23mpg in the summer. I don't think that's half bad considering the 4x4 has gotten me to work many times and made me some cash pluckin others out of the ditch.

Re:

If you have a 99 or newer, it don't make any difference on your mileage except maybe if you have a 4.10 gear. When you click it in 2wd, nothing on the front but, the 2 wheels turn. My last 4 tanks of gas ( I reset the odo at the fill-up and divide the gallons into total miles) I have gotten 22 miles mpg with about 3/4 driving at 70mph. My 99 was good for 20 mpg, but, had 4.10 gears vs 3.73 in the 07.
Both trucks were XLT loaded with 4.0 and 5spd auto.
I have no complaints about my mileage, and no complaints at all about my truck.:yahoo::D

well 2WD is cheaper, lighter and less moving parts to brake. the simpler the better.

Yeah theres nothing wrong with that, Exactly what this thread is about. 4x2 vs. 4x4. Some are going to prefer one over the other. I have gotten a best of 27mpg so far on my 4x2 automatic. Its a great truck and I dont plan on offroading. Its a perfect daily driver and utility truck, and very cheap on gas. If you do alot of offroading a 4x4 is the way to go but for me 22mpg is just not that good for a small sized pickup. Again I get 100 miles more a tank on mine and that equals 2.5 trips to work. It adds up.

Both the Ranger 4x2 and 4x4 are excellent vehicles and I think one is not really that much better than the other both have their pros and cons and its up to the individual to chose whats more important to them.

yea but a 4x4 is funner:D

4x2 is fun as well. On huge rocks Im sure it would suck though. But street driving its sweet.:D

i have gotten a best of just 26 mpg. with a 4x4 ranger, that tips the scales at 5850 pounds "light"

and it sure as hell is loads better then a 2wd 4 wheezer.

4x4 not needed for snow? well if you can shovel 12 miles of drifted packed snow faster then i can drive over it then more power to ya. because you sure as hell are not going to drive a 2wd anything through there when its snowing and drifted. it has stopped my cherokee requiring alot of working to get thru, but i got thru.

i would have missed 15 days of work since november or have at least been 2-6 hours late if i had only a 2wd vehicle. afterall, you can take a 2wd thru there after the plow goes thru.....till the drifts come back....its a coin toss.

as to getting to the wells to service them...i dont think a 2wd is going to do that even after i plow it with the dozer...its pretty shitty lease access, real hilly and twisty.

but thats secondary roads and lease roads. and not many people have to deal with that.

if you can drive a 2wd thru it.....congradulations, its car approved:icon_thumby: good to know my wifes mini van can make it thru there too:icon_thumby::icon_thumby:.

this one has my vote for gayest thread ever.:thefinger:

and 2wd low is too nice for trailering, especially twisting thru tight trees and garages ect. way nice.

^^^Again I have had no problem in the snow this year and I have driven in every snowfall this year. I have driven mustangs in over a foot of snow(before plows) and made it to work which is 21 miles from home. Its all about the driver and patience. I know people who wont even attempt to go to work if it snows 8 inchs or more no matter what they drive. Im not saying you wont get stuck in a car or 4x2 truck once in awhile but those time are so few and far between that I couldnt justify spending a few thousand more on a 4x4 that I would probably only kick in a couple times a year. A snow shovel is far cheaper. I live in michigan and I have never been severly stuck in snow my 19 winters driving here. Twice I had to use a snow shovel to help me along in the mustang but that was only one snowfall.(the 12+ inchs I mentoned) It pays to be prepared.:icon_cheers:

People were driving cars in deep snow way before the 4x4 became popular.

As for your 26mpg good for you. But the fact is most who have the current 4.0 4x4 wont get much better than 22mpg.

Oh and if this is such a gay thread, why repsond in it.:icon_confused:

just to be a dick.....

i live in michigan. and yesterday the only patience to drive down the road i was on in a 2wd would have been waiting for a plow.

i guess it all depends on when you leave for work. 3-5 am is when i head out and generally am the first thru there if its snowing.

and type of snow is real real big factor too that needs to be considered. if the road is seasoned a 2wd can easily bust 15 inches of nice powder. on a hang up generally back out and hit er again.

in this crap i am takling about it wants to spin the jeep in a circle, but the ranger murders it no problem, even in 2wd till i get to 18 inch to 2 foot drifts.

now...if you were behind me you could get thru till the deep drifts with a 2wd ranger i am sure. a lifted 2wd on 33's would do real well. but not going first.

next big snow say, over 8 inches non windy... 5 inches windy... be in houghton lake around 3 am......you lead the way.

if you can do my route in a 2wd stock ranger i might just give you my ol jeep.

oh..and i am cheating on the milage....its a diesel.:thefinger:
