283 SBC! in an 87 ranger?

F*@% the guy with the 283 just sent me an email saying that he sold it. :annoyed::bawling:
well I guess I'm looking for a motor:annoyed:
oh well you win some you lose some:dunno:

Your gonna build the 283, right? Punch that thing out 125 thousands to a 301, healthy cam, good set of heads, and that lil' SB will SCREAM all the way to 10k rpms!:icon_surprised::yahoo:

I'd take a 283 or 327 any day of the week!!!
Good buddy of mine did the 301 but from what I remember, use the 283 crank in a 327. Does that sound right to you who know chebys upside down? That was so, so long ago. He did slap the good 365/375 fuelie heads and cam in it. Put the motor in a '59' English Ford, used an Econoline straight axle and ran it on the street, even in slight snow some times. One hell of a motor, drove it once.

Actually the 67 Z28 302 was just that configuration usin small journal 327 block, then the 68 & 69 were large journal 327 blocks. The fastest car I have ever driven to date was a 68 Z28, had it up to 160mph, then again, I've had a 300hp/350 in a 70 Camaro that had a 150mph speedo buried and still pullin, both cars had Muncie 4spds.

Damn, thought I was just pulling that out of my old ass! Thought that was the the hot combo in the late 60's even before the "Z" motor showed up.

I don't think any new car is a muscle car unless you build it yourself.:icon_welder:

Ole guy here too..did you know the reverse of that comb was the 283 block with the 327 crank=307 one of the worst motors chevy ever built. BTW the 5.0 and the chevy 302 have the same bore and stroke 4 X 3 the 289=4 x 2.87.

it wasnt the worst motor ever built. there not big power engines. they make 200 hp stock. they run great. there stout engines. they just lack in the balls-y area.

Oh really>>>>

I guess somebody otta tell the sprint car boys of the past, as alotta of them early sprint car boys ran 307 SBC bored 30 over to 312, liked rpms and would scream.:icon_twisted:

As a matter of fact, I have a 307 sittin under my bench that I have just those intentions for............I owned a few, no they weren't power houses stock, but were reliable and fairly economical.............

sorry long stroke and small bore always makes for a fairly torquey but NOT high reving screaming engine as the 302 comb would be. As for hp with all equal equipment the 302 will put out 50 to 100 more than the 307..im sure they are probably a decent motor to use in a dirt or short track oval stock class car because of the torque. I dont think you will ever see a record holding NHRA 307 stock class car though.
