Only real question I have is the distance between axle flange to flange. of 8.8 28 spline and the 31 spline 8.8 from explorers. is it the same or longer flange to flange?

There is no 28 spline Explorer axle.

All Explorer axles are 59.5" WMS-WMS.

Sorry 92 ranger 8.8 28 spline to 96 explorer 8.8 31 spline.

the explorer axle is 1.5 inches wider 3/4 of an inch on each side. but you get a much stronger axle and more than likely a l.s and disc brakes.

Wrong.

it's 1.5" PER SIDE wider (3" overall)

Its 3" wider than a 90-93 ranger 8.8.

I don't mean to jack this thread, it is kinda related but; would 31 spline axles fit in my 95 8.8 (28spline) housing w/ drums, If I do gears for 31spline as well as locker w/ carrier to match?

No.

The shafts are longer and the bearing and seal surfaces are larger.

You would need custom-made shafts for that to work in your 28 spline housing.
