$2100 too much for an 89?

Found a pristine 89 4cyl 5sp single cab semi-locally. Priced at $2100. Looks pristine except he claims the odometer stopped working so unsure of the mileage. Thoughts?

That's a nice clean looking little truck. If it runs good and doesn't have puddles under it any running vehicle for 2 grand.... Well even if you buy it and it dies a year later you ain't out anything.

Maybe a little high for a 2wd but for as clean as it is it is hard to go wrong.

Worst case powertrainwise it would be a great 5.0 swap candidate.

Worst case bodywise the newspaper rots out and quits holding the bondo to the truck. :icon_twisted:

It looks really clean and the white walls scream it was an older guys truck so it was probably just babied.

After having worked on many wrecks and sunk that amount into a truck that doesn't even come close to what that looks like, I say it's a great buy....once it's been checked over. I figure my rust free b-ii is worth a $1,000.00 with out interior or running gear.

Buying it for MPG so a 5.0 swap would be counterintuitive, although I loved both 5.0 Fox bodies I owned. 2WD doesn't bother me either. If I get an itch to go wheeling I'll take the Jeep and beat that up.

If the truck runs great, no vibrations, motor is tight, no leaks and the brakes are great and there is no hidden rust (under the bed/frame area) it is a good price. Try for $1900 and see what he does. Does he have any receipts for service on the truck? That is a big plus since you don't know the true milage. But the best thing to do is make sure the title is clear and it is not a rebuilt title. The truck looks pretty good.
I went shopping with my cousin to find him a good running Ranger last week and I picked him out a '90 extended cab, 2wd with a V6 auto, a/c, roll up windows (he is afraid of power windows). The truck has 92,000 original miles and it was a family owned truck (dad passed it on down to son and daughter). So far he loves it and drives it every day.

A well set up 5.0 swap can get mid 20's.

I was just saying it looked good enough that push came to shove it would easily be worthy of putting an engine in, even a 2.3T if you wanted to stay away from an 8. :D

2wd's are not usually worth as much as a 4wd.

On the other side of the 4WD debate... 2WD means no transfer case, front diff, front hubs, or front drive shaft to worry about.

I am not debating anything, just usually 2wd's don't bring as much money as an otherwise comparable 4wd.

$2100 might be a tad high for a 2wd, but as uncommon as they are that straight and clean I still don't think it is a bad deal if it looks that good in real life. Always ask a little less but I don't think it is that far off.

He has only had it a short while. He bought the truck for his son and he doesn't like driving a manual so he's selling it. No maintenance records that I know of. I'll probably end up changing the timing belt in short order as well anyway. He originally wanted $2450 for it but got it down to $2100. Hopefully I can drive off with it for $2k.

4cyl is all the power I need/want. Just for around town really. I wouldn't even like the 6cyl since the vulcan really doesn't have any benefits vs the 4 and I really am not a fan of the 3.0 anyway. Owned a 3.0 auto and it was anemic.

I dunno. Thats about 3x what I would pay for that.

But then again, it has been pointed out to me that I am cheap.

Been looking for quite some time. There really are no Rangers of any year anywhere in my area that are still running in any kind of decent condition (i.e. not rusted in multiple places) for less than $1800 really.

Used car prices have been creeping up over the years. Blame who you want but it is what it is.
