My credo
I need more sleep.
So being now that I actually will have a job in a couple of weeks, and with my truck about to hit 100k I've been looking at the new Ranger. I have to say, I am disappointed. I was hoping they'd bring back my color Screaming Yellow, but really all they have are silver, white, grey, black and orange. No FX4 level 2 options either, plus I really would like a V6 (or a V8). I watched doug demuros video and he is right, it's actually an aging truck now, only new to North America. I feel like I should wait, right now it doesn't feel like the Ranger is back kicking and screaming, more like poking gently at a balloon which, I guess Ford doesn't really feel like going all out on it till they gauge how it's going to do.

Also no side folding jumpseats is no fun.
Oh and that engine comes with auto stop start technology, and I dont know if it can be disabled.

You forgot red LOL.

I drove a 2019 Ford Ranger FX4 off-road in Californa.

Why do you want a V6? What don't you like about the 2.3L EcoBoost?

They do have a red(ish) on the higher end packages. I really just want a V6 for the long end reliability, and more power. I'm just not a fan of small engines with turbos.

I saw the FX4, but I wish they had a package that was a little more crazy like the level 2.

I did see the sport package, but without a yellow color and some sweet alocas Im not sold on it.

I haven't been able to get all of the specs on the rear axle. I know it's an Advantek 220mm which is 8.66 inches and is rated at 5,457 torque capacity (7400 Nm), and that it comes with 3.73 gears. I still want to know what the axle shaft diameter is and spline count.

I think it's cool that it comes with an electric locker.

The new FX4:

Tuned off-road monotube shocks.
All-terrain tires with aggressive tread.
Traction-enhancing electronic-locking rear differential.
Exposed steel front bash plate.
Heavy-duty front skid plate.
Skid plates for the electric power-assist steering (EPAS) electric motor, transfer case and fuel tank.

And inside, a cluster screen provides feedback on pitch and roll plus steering angle.

Included also are the Terrain Management System™ and Trail Control™ providing essential off-road technology.

:shok:

i will give you the yellow paint is cool and should be here.

compared to the previous level 2...which was a 3.5 maybe 4 on wheel it stock scale......this truck is a 12. the old fx4 cant hold a candle to it. it is insane compared to the level 2...

not sure which setup it has for stop start but if its like the standard setup disconnecting it from the battery would fix it. with any new truck buying a tuner will e par for me. and they are trying to take that away now too.

engine...

i reserve judgement....its not unreliable for the classic reasons. its better then any previous engine by far.

but the little things like boost leakage contaminating the drive by wire throttle body, putting it in default out of the blue...

bad/old or wrong oil causing predictive change rate issues with cam phasing which blows out o2 readings from overlap issues...and a size-able list of other drive-ability wierdo sheeeeeit..are things i expect but hope to see little of.... time will tell.

i am glad for now they kept the reg style water pump and mech fan instead of going to an electric water pump to allow more power from the engine and slow speed high load towing and an electric fan. but thats probably coming before any of the cool v6 engines.

i bet yellow is coming....and waiting for it will be smart.

Don't forget the Lightning Blue--That's the color I ordered. Lariat Crew Cab 4x4, 501A pkg, tow pkg, e-locking diff, and spray-in bed liner. And yes, you can turn off the start-stop feature with a button by the shifter.

That is pretty nice. I agree that the new offroad stuff is night and day to the older tech I was hoping there was gonna, be a hardcore package. Then again they might as well build a raptor variant.

Make sure you post up pics when it's delivered

From the reviews I’ve seen, the auto start/stop can be disabled but resets as soon as the truck is shut off. I recall seeing something about a permanent disable but it was only once and I don’t remember who said it or who was coming out with the work around.

It’s been said by internet/youtube experts that vehicles with auto start/stop have heavier duty starters because of the extra wear and tear. Could be true, possibly.

I’ve driven a car with the system and it was different but pretty much a nonissue and fairly transparent. I’m not so sure I would like that feature much in the winter months when you are wanting the engine to warm up as fast as possible but there is the optional block heater and the option to temporarily disable the system, so it might be ok.

Like others have said, the FX4 on the new Ranger is way better than even the old Level II. We just need more data on what exactly has been installed.

This is the first year for it, so I’m sure some extra/new goodies will be added after Ford sees how the model and market does.

The perception that Ford brought the Ranger back in the U.S. market kicking and screaming is a valid one in my opinion. More money is made with the F150 and Ford was trying to make everyone buy that model instead. I’m sure Toyota and Nissan were very happy about it, as well as GM to some degree.

I hope the Ranger does well from a selfish point of view as well as for the market.

Have you thought about a wrap in yellow? I follow 4XOverland on youtube and he had his Toyota troop carrier wrapped and has gone quite a few offroad places in Australia and his has held up well. Hard to tel it's not actual paint, at least on the video's. I didn't even realize it was a wrap until he did a video about how well it has held up. Helps protect the actual paint underneath as well.

I know a guy who wrapped his BMW in flat black for protection and it looks cool.:icon_hornsup:

You can have the dealer shut it off but it voids the warranty.

I have also read that it also monitors resistance on the trailer wiring, it won't work if it is hooked up to trailer (so the starter isn't overloaded) or if it "thinks" there is a trailer. As in a lighted hitch plug with enough resistance to trick it into thinking there is a trailer.

As for colors... color options today suck in general. Everybody is afraid to get a color other than gray because gray is supposed to have the best resale value. Even the F-150 is 50 shades of gray, a couple reds and a couple blues for options. And thus every truck you look at already looks like somebody you know's truck.

Except of course Toyota, they can have the cool tan, battleship gray and the weird blue... and still have the best resale in the industry. :icon_confused:

Why do you want a V6? What don't you like about the 2.3L EcoBoost?

I want a V-6 because they are smoother. I have never driven a 4 cylinder that was smooth. They vibrate a lot especially at idle and are kind of buzzy at higher rpm. I think the 2.3L EcoBoost has plenty of power though. My preference would be a small (2.7L?) EcoBoost V-6 with similar or slight better power than the 2.3L EcoBoost.

V6 wrote the book on buzzy...
