I hope this is the right section to post this. I have a 2011 Ranger with 80000 kms on it and it sounds like the fuel pump is whining. Not all the time, occasionally. Whether I'm idling or driving the noise stays the same tone. I can also hear it when I first turn the key, it whines for a couple of seconds. Same as the fuel pump. Can this be the pump? Has anyone else heard off whining fuel pumps? It's making me whine. :icon_confused:

The fuel pump is an electric motor, as such it is capable of making a whining noise.

Since you have about 50,000 miles on it the fuel pump is probably out of warranty, so unless you want to spend a few hundred on a new pump I would not worry about it unless it starts to run poorly.

Thanks adsm. I know it doesn't matter, but I guess it's more of a high pitch whine. I guess your right though. It is a motor and motors sometimes make noise. The truck runs fine and has never given any troubles. Would the engine light come on with this issue?

From a fuel pump noise, no. Most fuel pump issues will cause a noticeable symptom, misfires, lack of power, hard starts, etc before they will throw codes and trip a check engine light.

Take off the fuel cap and look inside the tank and see if you can see the problem.

I appreciate all the help. This thing is driving me nuts. My big worry is that it just quits and I'm stranded on the side of the highway. This is my primary vehicle and I do travel quite a bit. I have an appointment on Thursday for service and they are going to look at it then. I was able to record the noise this evening, just in case it doesn't appear when they are looking at it. I did have some service work done in the spring which involved removing the tank, driveshaft, etc to replace some canister and lines that were clogged. I'm not sure if all this is related or not. That was when it was under warranty. I also noticed that I have a small transmission leak where the driveshaft goes in. They will be hearing about that one as well. I always have my work done at the dealer because, well, they are suppose to do quality work. I'm starting to think otherwise.

So I took my Ranger to the dealer and it was confirmed that the fuel pump was on the way out. The price of the pump here is 480 dollars and a couple hours labour at 95 per hour. Add 15 percent tax on top. Ouch. Luckily they covered it under an emission warranty. I guess the emission warranty was good to 100,000kms. I only have 81000 on mine. They also told me that a dirty fuel filter can make the pump go bad. I have not changed the filter until now. Lord only knows what crap is in the fuel these days..I dodged a bullet this time.

Severe service interval on the fuel filter is every 24,000kms. Swap the filter first before attempting anything further.

You got lucky on that one. My state has the best emissons warranty in the US and I don't think I have ever seen a fuel pump covered under emissions.
