2011 Mustang gets new V6

that doesn't make it fun or cool, just means too many people have too much money.
You have to realize that the people that bought those Cobra Jets probably have 150K wrapped up in their trailer, tools and towing rigs. They are not street legal, no VIN, strip only. You want to road race, step up to the FR500 turn-key Mustang, only 125K. Totally agree, some people have way too much money. Life is just not fair.

My sentiments exactly.

IMO, the handling of a sports car is every bit as important as power.

Hate to break it to y'all but the Mustang is a sporty muscle car.

Ford's sports car was the GT, which had IRS.

hate to break it to you but the Mustang was never meant to be a muscle car. it was meant to be secretary's car (i.e. chick car). That was the market that it was developed for. It didn't become a Muscle car until Shelby got a hold of it.

and at $125k for a Shelby KR or 76K for a Zo6 Vette....... guess I will buy the Vette.......... at 125k the KR still cannot out corner the Zo6 'vette.

To be honest, I really don't consider the Mustang to be a true sports car. I suppose I just said that because that's what it seems to be commonly referred to as.

Up until the current generation, I've never really been that impressed with the Mustang. I have always viewed it as just a sporty car - a big engine, but little else to be thrilled with. But to be fair, it's a good bang-for-buck car.

In my opinion, a true sports car doesn't have back seats, among many other things that a Mustang lacks.

I love the 'Vette, but it obviously costs much more.

Although pound for pound the 'Vette is a (semi) affordable sports car. It comes out on top just for being all the way from a decent performance car GS to a nice track car Z06 to an absolute beast at the ZR1

not really, a Zo6 can be had for around $76,000. the only mustang competitive with it is the KR starting at $86,000

It was my understanding that when the current Mustang platform was designed to replace the Fox, they designed it in such a way that it could easily and inexpensively be adapted to an IRS setup in the event they decided to use one, unlike the Fox body which require extensive and expensive adaptation to get IRS on the Cobra.

Unless that's changed, it will take an IRS setup if Ford so chooses. My guess is the V6 and probably even the basic GT will still be a solid axle for a long time to come, but there could be more upscale future model variations with IRS on the current platform.

On the IRS vs solid axle debate, on a sporty car I prefer IRS every time. Sure, they've done ok at keeping the solid axle competitive, but it takes a lot of work and the massive unsprung weight is a hindrance. Not to mention it just rides better.

I agree. Any model is totally worth the price. And I think the 'Vette is a steal, considering some models can compete with some $200K Italian cars.
I think it's the most affordable true American sports car.

I just meant a GT compared to even the most base model 'Vette.....
Unless I'm mistaken, I thought a GT was around 30K, while a Corvette is in the mid-40's....

Yes, from what my research has told me (lol) the IRS out of the Falcon bolts up with minimal modifications. Someone I know in Australia actually has a Falcon with an S197 Mustang live axle rearend under it for drag racing.
