2011 Mustang gets new V6

That's gonna be one sweet Mustang. But with all these upgrades it makes me wonder how much longer the solid axle will be around.

yeah ..... thats really the downfall of the mustang. What good does it do to be able to outrun a corvette of you can't out corner the corvette.

There is going to be a performance package for the V-6, even rumors of a "Trac Pack" option with the 3.73 gear.\

2011 Mustang Performance Package upgrades include:

- A 3.31 rear axle ratio for quicker off-the-line acceleration
- Mustang GT coupe front and rear stabilizer bars
- Mustang GT front struts and rear shocks/springs
- Shelby GT500 rear lower control arm
- Unique 19-inch wheels
- Pirelli performance tires for improved grip
- Mustang GT front and rear brake calipers with Performance Friction pads
- A strut tower brace for increased body rigidity
- Unique electronic stability control calibration with Sport mode for performance driving
- Unique badging

There was an IRS mustang. The late 90's Cobras and Shelbys had an independant rear similar to corvettes. Ford abandoned that design after a year or two though because they determined that the increased handling was far outweighed by the increased cost.

The '99, '01, and '03-'04 cobras had IRS, but the Shelbys have a solid rear axle.

Not really sure that you need the IRS to road race a Mustang, they have been doing quite good for the last many years. Don't know what rear suspension this one has but he sure has fun with the Corvettes. Grab a couple of cold ones and have a ride along!

Agreed. I'd like to see someone go and explain to Steeda or Maximum Motorsports or Griggs how you need an IRS instead of a solid axle to keep up with corvettes in the handling department.

I can't wait to hear exhaust clips, sounds like one badass Mustang.

Well the current D2C chassis underpining the S-197 Mustang came out in 2005 so assuming a 9 year model run we won't see a new chassis until 2014. Ford also said in their 2006 "Way Forward" restructuring plan they weren't currently working on a new RWD chassis so the D2C could be underneath the Mustang for a while, like the FOX platform. The FOX platform worked fine and they even revamped it into the FOX-4 so we could see some D2C revamps. If the new chassis does work in IRS (like the Australian Falcon has, which apparently fits under the 'Stang) we may not see it until later even. Ford has does wonders with the live axle setup so don't discount it. Although the D2C platform does shar some of its naughty bits with the DEW98 platform which had four-wheel independent suspension so you never know.

I'm kind of torn between solid rear axle and irs. Ford has really pushed the ability of a solid axle to handle, but it still is one of those few last weak links in the new Mustang. Giving it an irs would let the car truly be pushed to its limits but at the same time its losing a bit of its old school muscle car identity.

Don't forget cost. For people that keep stuff forever and treat my stuff nice IRS adds more wear peices adn complexity. If Ford was smart it would be an option to shut up all the cry baby magazines and keep the loyalist happy at the same time.

Those new Cobra Jets are brutal! So much so they run a 9" rear end. Optioned up they ran $95K last year but sold out in two weeks, only 50 made.

that doesn't make it fun or cool, just means too many people have too much money.

where is the fun in going in a straight line?

My sentiments exactly.

IMO, the handling of a sports car is every bit as important as power.
