My BIL has an 08 F350 6.4 PSD that is not getting boost. Right when it happened the "drive to clean exhaust" filter message appeared. This thing is a danger on the road to even drive.... can't go over 45 mph. I am a simpleton when it comes to diesels .... any ideas what I can check?

No CEL either.....

Did it actually go into regen and finish the cylce?

No... it still wants to be driven. But this thing is horribly underpowered. Kind of scared to drive it.

And the boost gauge does not budge.

I did find a vacuum line attached to the overflow that is not hooked to anything. I thought that was odd. I can't see where it would go though.

Could be a possible plugged up DPF

The vac line is where it is supposed to be, there was a recall about those and it is in the proper position.

If it didn't finish regen take it out and pound the living piss out of it until it does. If it did finish regen then it slagged the DPF and needs a new one.

Where is the DPF located? When it is in Regen, does it lose all boost?

He also said it's been getting horrible mpgs lately if that tells you anything.

This thing is a work truck, and it's been neglected. It has 104,000 miles on it and I changed the air filter for the first time today (75 bucks). I also drained the water/fuel separator thing until diesel was coming out of it.

I am going to go take it out and beat on it in a few. It is slowly running a bit better but still no.boost... and the CEL just came on. So I will take it to Autozone and get it scanned. I am 200 miles from home - and I feel naked without my tools with me.

Also... the exhaust does not smell like diesel. It smells like when you do the self clean on an oven.

I would say the dpf is shot. Delete the dpf and get a tuner......... better MPG abd power.

80% of issues with the 6.4 involve the emissions controls. That or somebody dogs it.

How about the water separator does it need drained?

Edit:didn't read your above post about the water.

He might do that.

Okay so now I am driving it. Now this place is reduced engine power. Still no sign of any boost. Top speed is now 30 miles per hour.

The DPF is the Diesel Particulate Filter, it is the huge thing in the exhaust.

Regen (regeneration) is what happens when the computer sees too much back pressure in the exhaust. It assumes the filter is starting to plug with soot and shoots fuel into the cylinder on the exhaust stroke so it can get into the filter and burn the junk out. This should have no effect on boost pressures or turbo operation.

The problem is that once you get so many miles on the filter they don't "clean out" so much as "melt down".

DPF meltdown on the other hand is identical to cat meltdown in a gas engine in terms of what it does to how the engine runs. The thing with turbo engines and exhaust restrictions is that the turbo runs on exhaust flow. When the exhaust becomes restricted and pressurized the turbos stop working because the gas can't flow and expand and so it doesn't get the turbos spinning. That is why you don't have any boost.

I saw the EBP valve plate on a 7.3 get bent to where the valve was always 3/4 closed no matter what position it was in, it caused similar symptoms.

The codes were cylinder 2 misfire ( most recent code) and the DPF and it had 2 codes saying the no turbo pressure sensed.

He is going to take it to the dealer. The message for cleaning the exhaust was replaced by the reduced engine power.

Damn thing.....

Thanks again for your help guys. Diesels are a bit out of my league.
