I'm replacing the lower ball joint on an '03 4x4 automatic with "on the fly" 4 wheel drive and I'm stuck on the removal of the CV axle/Hub assembly - pardon the lack of knowledge here but I new to working on trucks.
I've read a multitude of posts that seem to give conflicting info on how to do this. I rented a tool from my local Autozone but it doesn't look like it will work - they did not have a specific CV/hub puller.
I have the socket for the hub retaining nut. It looks like the tie-rod end has to be removed from the steering knuckle as well?
If anyone has some advice on how to do this without damaging the CV that would be awesome!

Remove the brake caliper and bracket and rotor.
Remove the big nut on the end of the CV axle. Take off the upper and lower ball joint nuts along with the tie rod end.
Use a drift to free the CV shaft from the wheel bearing/hub.
Separate the tie rod and upper and lower ball joints, remove the knuckle.

You can now replace the lower ball joint and the upper control arms.
