I have a 2003 edge 4.0 4x4. There has been a chirping or whining noise coming from the engine. It seems to begin after I have driven the truck about 5-6 miles. I only notice the noise when at or near idle and seems to go away as i accelerate. Also when I shut the engine off It makes a whistling noise that winds down to a stop.

Check the fan clutch first.

mine does it too, replace the belt. i did and it went away

Thanks guys. I looked at the belt today and looks like it has seen better days. How do I go about checking the clutch fan?

Keep the belt on and see if the fan spins pretty freely like its still stiff but its not hard to turn by hand. Also try it after you drove around for a while.

But if you change the belt and it went away then it probably is fine.

Ok guys it is definitely not the belt or the fan. replaced the belt and still does it. So I removed the belt and started the motor and the noise seems to becoming from the passenger side of the motor. I can hear it really well if i am under the truck near the oil filter. I replaced the oil filter thinking it was defective but no luck noise is still there. Also when I shut the engine off the noise keeps whistling for about 5 seconds and slowly stops like it ran out of air to make the whistle

If that truck is air conditioned do it again with the a/c in the OFF position to see if you hear the noise after the engine is shut down.

I don't make a difference if the ac is on full blast or off the noise is definitely not coming from the front of the motor. This problem all stemmed from when my dad used the truck to haul a race car back from north Carolina in witch he got the oil changed by an oil change facility. The noise is predominantly louder under the vehicle near the filter. Is there some was the oil change place installed a defective filter or just plain did something wrong to break something where the oil filter mounts? I will try and place a video on youtube so you all can see what i am talking about.

Try it!

The only thing that keeps going when the engine is cut off is the pressure inside the A/C system.. The pressure slowly bleeds down. I can hear mine also.

Turn the A/C to the OFF position and then start the engine and kill it! See if you still hear the sound. IT IS WORTH A TRY!

I wonder if the vacuum reservoir has a small leak.

how would check for a vacuum reservoir leak? I know where it is located. Would I just plug all the lines coming to it?

Pull the line from the main vac tee and plug the tee, then run the engine and shut it off and see if you still hear the same noise.
