2002 Ranger 4x4 - whining noise in 1st gear

Hi all, we recently were gifted a 2002 Ranger 4x4 automatic. When driving in 1st gear, its feels like there is a drag, and there is a whining noise. Every other gear is fine. Wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and what it might be. Any ideas?

What does the trans fluid looks like?

How sure are you it is coming from the transmission?

I'd check the parking brake 1st. Make sure it isn't engaged.
