Hi I have a 2002 Ford Ranger with a 3.0L Vin V, with a auto trans with 109,000 miles on it it, within the last month or so I have started to notice a kinda of jerking feel allmost like a miss while at a constant speed going up hill, it does this both with the cruise on and off mainly at higher speeds on the expressway. I watched the RPM'S during this and it has no effect on them what so ever. I have hooked it up to a computer and it has no codes in the system, If any one has an idea of what this could be I would greatly appreciate any input.

start with a basic tuneup. air filter, fuel filter, motorcraft or autolite spark plugs, wires.

I just replaced the fuel filter about 4,000 miles ago, I put new plugs and wires in about 4-5 months back but I will check those again as well as for the air filter I have a K&N and just cleaned that the other day. Could the distrubtor be causeing this problem.

what brand are the plugs?

a K&N you say....check your MAF sensor out. over-oiling your filter will foul the MAFS out with oil. theres details on how to clean the MAFS in the tech library.

you dont have a distributor.

The plugs are Motorcraft plugs I will also try cleaning the MAF sensor as for the distributor I thought I had a coil pack but the book says that it's a distributor Im not sure though.

Ah thanks for the clarification on that I just saw what the book said. thanks for the information I will try and cleaning the MAF sensor tomorrow and look at the plugs as well and hopefully it takes care of the problem.

I had a slight miss at idle. Lazy O2 sensor Bank 1 (passenger side) It won't throw a code, and have you seen a drop in gas mileage as well? I replaced mine and gained 3 mpgs

Yes, I have seen a great decrease in gas mileage it has dropped to 12.5 MPG on my last tank of gas and several tanks before were also decreasing down to that as well.

If you are getting any belt squeal sounds it could be syncro as well. I had the syncro cause light mis-fire at varring rpms depending on engine temp an load. The syncro is not checked for codes over 2500rpms. I replaced mine at 79K.

Sorry not meaning to high jack the thread. but i'm having sim. problems if I hold it at 3k going down the highway it seems to miss. but I have yet to throw a code. also no chirping noise so I was wandering if it could be just the sensor going bad. Also if I am going up a hill climb and hold it at 5k I have no problems. plugs, wires and air filter 6 months ago going to change the fuel filter today and see if that helps. thanks

mine would go great then when it warmed up or i was on the interstate the engine would buck and the chk engine light would come on, i hammered the gas and let off it went away. my chk engine light stayed on after warming up for over 135k miles and i never thought too much about it. i always thought it was o2 sensor related, just never had the money to change the sensors at the time...if i only knew then what i know now, lol.

Just a update on my problem to try to help sombody else. when my would surge at 3k rpms only and not at any other rpm, well it turned out to be a bad fuel filter. hope this helps someone else.

water in the fuel will def do it (condensation in the lines and tank piling up in the fuel filter). ive changed my filter several times once or twice i had water but the same problem kept popping up, moreso/worse as the miles went on. she died b4 i had the time to address the issue.
