2002 Ranger Edge odd problem

Great site by the way, never seen such good info.
Have an odd problem with a 02 Ranger Edge, 3.0 auto electric shift 4x4. shift to 4wd and have lights, but nothing else. Put the thing in reverse and it will climb a tree. Found this out on a icy patch off road. Tried it a number of times, same thing. Any ideas would be welcome.

Pretty much has to be the transfer case or shift motor.

Sounds like it is not fully engaging. Might get a free fix by adjusting the shift motor.
