My 2002 3.0 ran like a top for years and years. For the last two years or so I haven’t driven it nearly as much. Sitting in a warehouse. But lately I have been driving it again. Had a number of small issues that I’ve been working though but this one has stumped me.
Idle speed is all over the place. Sometimes it will idle normally, others it will run very low or very high. Sometimes it will stall when putting it in gear, or stall when trying to accelerate from a stop.
Checked for vacuum leaks with a smoke tester, no leaks. Timing is good. Good plugs, wires, coil. New-ish fuel injectors, plastic cases were cracked on most of them but they worked otherwise. Fuel pressure is normal. Replaced the IAC valve with a new Motorcraft part, replacing the 5 year old Motorcraft that was on it, the last time I replaced the IAC it had a consistent high idle and the IAC fixed it. TPS and MAF read correct data, so should be no issues there. Computer has been reset after each part replacement. No codes.
My friend is the service manager at the local Ford dealer, they had the truck for a few weeks and messed with it in downtime and had no ideas.
I’m usually pretty good with diagnostics, but I’m about to say screw it and drop the 302 from my Explorer in it. Any ideas or suggestions are appreciated.
