2001 Lincoln LS w/ sport package.

IIRC all 1997+ explorers that weren't 2wd were AWD. They ditched the 4x4.

Gen II (95-01) v6s were auto 4wd, not all-wheel drive.

So basically awd with some hesitation.

Am I correct that auto 4x4 turns on by itself when it senses a wheel slip?

thats how it works in my Blazer.

The 4x4 expo my brother had was 2wd on normal conditions, and engaged 4wd when a rear tire was slipping. u had 4wd auto as default selection, then 4wd, and 4wd low.

Interesting.

In all honesty, I'd probably rather have the 4x4 anyway. :D But mainly if it's selectable.. or an easy swap to a manual t-case.

More or less.

95-96 v6 Ex's had the options of 2wd, A4wd, or 4 low.
96-01 had A4wd, 4 high, 4 low.

Either way, it used the less then stellar 4405 t-case.

Yeah, but that tcase has a clutch type drive on the front output to allow for on-road driving without causing damage. The fron will pull offroad, but will slip some if under a bind...

I would leave the intense stuff to the ranger. I have to go offroad to get to work in the summer, haha. Awd vehicles have some trouble getting to the upper quarry when it's wet out.

Id rather have a 4X4 Ranger.
the expo 4wd system seems to be more for slippery conditions or light mud.
not for too rough terrains

So..

It still has a selector switch so if I wanted to, I could offroad?

Yes.

The magnetic clutch is used to press 3 balls in a "ramp" type set up to engage 4x4. The pressure is put mostly on the ball bearings and ramp. If 4 high is engaged is will not slip.

The way it keeps from damaging anything in auto is to engage and disengage only when needed.
