Posting this as an answer to my own question which may in turn be helpful to someone else.

There is a 1999 Helms electrical manual for the explorer/mountaineer that is broadly in distribution on forums. As I am converting my trans harness to a microsquirt TCU.

The neutral safety switch for 2001 Explorer 4r70w/5.0L was removed from C112, pins 7 and 8. This would be circuit 57 (ground/chassis) and circuit 463, from the PCM being switched to ground in neutral/safe gear.

Interestingly circuit 463 does exist at the PCM, but conductors were deleted from C112, thru C116.
I don’t have access to a 2001 specific electrical manual to know where or if a neutral safety switch exists.

If anyone has access to the DTR switch electrical diagram showing at least part of the expected Neutral Safety Switch I would surely appreciate it.
I have identified every wire in the transmission harness (including all HO2 systems) so if there is an NSS, then its detection is outside of the transmission entirely.

My own follow up.

The manual has a few typos I have found and indeed this is one of them.

In the case of the 4.0 engine, using the 5R55E, the GEM needs neutral safety for control of the electric shift control (4wd crap). Yet the GEM diagram falsely (Multifunction electronic control module) shows a DTR input for the 5.0l engine and the 4.0l engine.

Adding to the confusion, 4R70/5.0 DTR diagram shows the NSS feeding the GEM. So TWO pages confirm the existence and need for the NSS.

More confirmation is given when the connectors C112 (DTR connector on trans), C116, trans harness connector to C115, engine harness connector…… all show circuit 463 and 57, the pair used for NSS. And the friking factory then left the wires in harness from C116 to C115!

All of that evidence sent me in a tail chase to find a missing matzoh that never existed.

The starter disconnect switch on circuit 329/1093 are all that is needed.

Thanks for letting me noodle this out publicly. Maybe someone else will have the same question.

Bottom line: regardless of the manual pictures and squiggles- there is no Neutral Safety Switch on the 5.0l/4R70. Ignore the detail and the wiring.
