2000 Ranger, shouldn't it have PVH hubs?

I just got a 2000 Ford Ranger 4x4 Supercab a couple weeks ago. I noticed it engages into and out of 4wd pretty much instantly, and was surprised to read online that the PVH hubs it has normally take a couple seconds to do their thing. Well, to make a long story short, I was going to do a mod to make them manual hubs (controlled by pushing in with your finger)...I pulled the hubs, and low and behold - no auto hubs, just a spindle and a nut :shok: wtf?

Is it possible my truck came with the 2001+ front axle even though it was made in june 99? It's a 5spd 4x4 XLT Supercab 4dr, 3.0 V6 with the offroad package (245/75/16 on alloys, skid plates, tow hooks).

I would say anything is possible. Do you have the rest of the vacuum system that would go along with those hubs? It's possible that someone has converted knuckles on out to 2001+.

Not sure...how would I check?

Look on your door tag and find the build date, if it is a late 00, it will have 01 stuff under it.

Same here, July 2000 build (Trenton), live axle. BONUS!!

BTW, I went one step further than you. I actually BOUGHT a set of AVM hubs before I even looked. Luckily I was able to sell them (months later when I figured it out) to a guy an another Ranger site.

The axle isn't any different right? Just the axle shaft/hubs?

Also, where would the vacuum system be if I had such a thing?

And, with this system, I know it doesn't disconnect at the hubs, does it disconnect at the axles or just in the t-case?

There would be vaccum lines going to each hub.

All the 4wd functions occur in the transfer case. Front driveshaft spins all the time, as do the front CV axles.

I know about the hubs, but I'm trying to figure out if my truck had PVH hubs stock and someone swapped on later axles/hubs or if it came without PVH hubs. There are no signs of vacuum lines at the hub, where would they be under the hood? There must be a difference between the PVH and non PVH rangers under the hood that I could look for.

Also, I have requested a build sheet for my truck from Ford, would that mention the hubs?

If you don't see any vacuum lines or extra hosing at the knuckle then your truck didn't come with the PVH system. Be happy and don't worry about it.
