Gathering the parts now was wondering about pats if i were to take the 2000 Mountaineer key and zip tie it to the pats transponder would it work as a bypass with the ranger pats modules or do i still have to tune it out or drag the truck to ford to have new keys made.

No, it wouldn't work very well, PATS keys needs to be inside the "loop"/wand around the key slot, this loop is just an antenna so is pretty much the same on all models.
When you turn on the key the loop sends an RF blast, this gives the RFID tag in the key just enough power to respond with its unique ID #, PATS checks # against it's list in memory.
If you put the Mountaineer key very close to the loop, inside cover, and for sure didn't use another PATS key in ignition, it might work.

You could remove the key cylinder and have it repinned for the Mountaineer keys, door keys would be different though, but they could be changed as well.

I think 2000 Ranger PATS still had the PATS module above the glove box, not sure about the Mountaineer.
PATS module and Computer(PCM) are "married" so must be used as a pair.
Only a Ford Dealer can "re-marry" PATS module and Computer if either needs to be replaced, and I believe it can only be done in the vehicle.

Thanks for the reply so if the auto yard has the keys ill grab em if not off to ford i go.

If you get both the PATS module and Computer, along with wiring harness from the Mountaineer, a Mobile locksmith can add your Ranger PATS keys to the Mountaineer's PATS memory.
Most locksmiths have the software for adding keys, and usually cheaper than Dealer even when they come to you.

For PATS you should have 3 working keys, reason being YOU can add your own 3rd or even 4th key if you have 2 working keys.
So with 3 keys if you lose one, you still have 2 so you can replace the lost key with just the cost of the key and cutting.

There is also an option to send out the computer for reprogramming, people who upgrade cams or add turbo/super chargers need upgraded air/fuel data, this programming can also turn off the PATS in the computer if requested.
PATS module can still disable starter motor but I think that can be addressed with a simple wiring change.

Or, you can remove the PATS antenna from around the ignition switch, zip tie the 5.0 expected key inside of it and tuck the key/antenna assembly out of the way.

If you can get at least one key from the same donor, get the door cylinder locks, ignition key cylinder, ecu, pats module (located behind the passenger airbag), pats transceiver (located around the ignition key cylinder). If you can get these from the same vehicle, you wont need to ziptie anything, and pats will function normally, and correctly. If you need a key programmed, I have the capability, pm me...

wondering if anybody has the capability to tune pats out if i send them the ecu and a case of beer or a couple bucks

If you decide to get an SCT tuner, I can write a tune to delete pats, depending on your ecu code...

SVT

i do have a locked x3

You have to send it in to SCT to have it unlocked. A dealer can't do it, it'll cost you $150 to have it unlocked if you cant return it to stock...

SVT

Yea im gonna send it off in a few weeks I got the locked tuner for a case of beer so 150 to unlock isnt bad

Tomarrow ill take pics of the parts gathered and get this build thread started

so the ecu i have is a nrt1

Thats a 98 specific ecu, which is basically pats with return style fuel system. The XDT2 would be a good ecu to swap to, and not have to deal with pats...

SVT

ok so XDT2 computer it is now the question lies in vss does the 97 pcm use the same vss signal as the 2000 ranger or will i have to add a vss to control shift points
