Delete 2.9L ECM

No egr on a 92... @1986RangerXL, See if you can pull up the ecm pinout for 86 vs 92. I suspect they'll be very different. We're treading in @RonD and @adsm08 territory at this point. Odds are one of them will know off the top of their head.

You can run the 92 if you eliminate the EGR. Thats what i would do.

He can run the 92 without eliminating the EGR. The parts for it won't do anything anymore, they'll just be along for the ride, but it will run fine.

Ford never published the meanings of the calibration codes. Any 2.9 or EEC-IV 3.0 PCM will run any 2.9. Auto vs manual is the most important thing. If you install an EGR computer on a non-EGR engine you will have codes and a light, but it will run. If you install a non-EGR computer on an EGR engine it will run fine.

The pinouts are slightly different, but all the differences are the pins that are missing from the computer that doesn't have the extras.

Wont federal vs cali emissions also cause issue? As the cali ones ran MAF instead of MAP correct?

So... 2.9 came in three air meter flavors - MAP, MAF, and VAM (UK/EU only).

@adsm08 is a HUGE fan of vane air meter equipped vehicles, just ask him.

...any chance you can post a photo of your engine bay? Now I am curious...

I am keeping the truck elsewhere until I can get it to daily driver status, so I can snap some photos tomorrow morning. What specifically? My '86 never had a MAP sensor, nor the bracket to hold it. The '87 body I put on does have the bracket though

The 86's didn't mount the MAP sensor to a bracket like the later ones did, it mounted inside a recessed cavity in the firewall in roughly the same spot.

All federal emissions 2.9s were speed/density air metering systems.

California emissions for 91 and 92 had MAF. That was it.

VAM belongs in the trash. My low opinion of carbs is well known. Carbs are better and more reliable than VAM.

Okay, my ignorance is showing. I went and educated myself on MAF vs MAP and yes mine is a MAP sensor just located in a funny place. Live and learn

Back to computers.. I will pm

Holy crap. You and I agree on two things in one post.

It is the apocalypse.
