2.9 v6 or 4.0 v6

Put the stroker kit on the 4.0.

I have not see one personally, only in the tech library. I just think it would be cool to have a stroker 6 cylinder.

that would be easy its called junkyard turbocharging

Not everyone can pick out a good turbo. I'd love to see you get this working somewhat properly on a stock MAP/SD 2.9L ECM. With all things considered, it could be done shittily for under $1000 I suppose (but not everyone wants that). I'd really want an MS for this one. And of coarse, you've seen some of the effects that running on a stock MAF computer even can have on your 4.0L project. Not everyone can tell what the hell is going on and that they might have a very serious air/fuel problem. I'd rather have something that works by design than by luck, IMO.

The only problem Ive had is running 17 psi on a 100% oem fuel system and 100% stock PCM. Also in that case the only thing that happened was a cracked headgasket. The same motor is still spinning as of this moment. The parts on my truck total under 150$ so I still have 850$ of the said 1000$ budget to upgrade parts. As of now however I have the boost steadily maintained at 5 psi with 21# injectors and the truck pulls strong with no rattling. If I had 850$ to spend on tuning and the fuel delivery system I'm pretty sure I could run 10-12 psi with no issues:icon_thumby:

As for the 2.9L speed density system the only way to get around tuning would be a MAF conversion which dosent cost too much I would think or tricking the fuel delivery with a FMU and using a Wideband 02 to adjust the FMU. The internals so far have proven that they can take a good beating. Im also as i speak been making soem changes on the MAf to compressor pipe and addin ga silent exhaust to go back to a sleeper effect.

its a little luck as you need soem luck in anythingh you do in life but also Ive done my research and obviously know how to strap a turbocharger to something. i also use my plugs and ears to make ghetto adjustments to the setup to make it run as good as i can with out the tuning equiptment that i cant afford at this moment.

I love how somebody delted my responce.....funny it was the only one in support of the 2.9.

ya what's with that!?! 2.9's beat the hell outta 4.0's in dependability and power for the size. only downside is any heavy pedal driving and the thing just guzzles gas. Trust me i know... ($200, month? v6? something doesn't add up)
Just curios what you meant about just don't over heat them?... i accidentally ran mine for about a month with really low coolant and it runs fine! till water pump went and overheated in like 2 seconds. would running on low fluid affect the water pumps decision to retire early? or just hard driving?:icon_idea:

I shall agree with this roast.

MMM, roast...

Anyways, you are only paying $200/month? My dad is paying that a week, he drives 60miles one way in his 4runner 6 days a week.

The 4.0 wipes the floor with 2.9 with its flat and respectable torque curve. Trust me I never had any problems with my 2.9 but the 4.0 is typically more dependable, give me a 4.0 any day.

Agreed. Those who argue that the 2.9 is more reliable somehow forget that all the major reliability problems of the 2.9 were actually fixed in the evolution to the 4.0.

The 2.9 was a good motor - I have no problem with it aside from the head cracking. The 4.0 is just a better version of it. And the fuel economy is VERY close when both engines are in good condition. My 2.9's ran about 18-24mpg depending on conditions, the 4.0 averaged 17-22mpg. My 2.3 is hovering from 21-27mpg so far, and my old 2.8 was 17-23mpg.
