i was going to turbo my 4 banger than i blew the tranny in my other truck so im taking the one out of the one i wanted to turbo. im starting to think that i might as well just buy a 5 speed 2.9 or 4.0 v6, i want at least 200hp and would like to beat on it a little. How much hp does the 2.9 put out and how much hp does the 4.0 put out, if they dont put out up to 200 hp, can i get one to put out 200hp for less 1,000 dollars. I would like to get a 2.9L and maybe turbo it or something.

the 4.0 will handle the abuse much better, it should be easier to turbo since it is a mass air system, and others on this site have done a 4.0 turbo. the 2.9 turbo has been done as well but since you have the choice go for the 4.0.

what kind of gas mileage does the 4.0 get cause i want 18MPG and like 15MPG if i am on the throttle. So how hard would it be to find a 4.0 4x4 extended cab between the years 87 to 92 for under 2,000

15-18mpg is around normal for a 4.0. Lower if lifted, big tires, on the throttle etc.

Early 4.0's are easy to find for cheap in Rangers and Explorers, 90-92 rangers and 91-94 explorers are the best candidates for a 4.0 swap.

There are a few people with turbo 4.0's on here...

2.9 - 140 hp and 170 ft lb
4.0 - 160 hp and 225 ft lb

The 2.9 is a strong runner in stock form, but is about as tuned as its going to get, it makes more power per Cubic Inch then a 302 H.O or a 5.8L Lightning.

The 4.0 is a pig compared to the 2.9 if you compare power per CI, i dont know much about turbo setups but the 2.9 has a shorter stroke then the 4.0, allowing more revving potential which is normally good with a turbo, and since its got good low end torque anyways you shouldnt lose to much off the line.

I say go with a 2.9, the internal parts (pistons, crank, etc) are just as stout as a 4.0 (if not a little stouter) and overall the 2.9 is just as tough as the 4.0, just make sure it dont overheat.

a turbo 4.0 is fun but you already have a 2.3. Why not swap in a turbo 2.3L. Yo ucan find full turbocoupes that have everything for the swap under 1000$ and alot of the time under 500$. The full turbocoupe will give you; a forged motor that can take lots of boost/abuse, the turbocharger, intercooler, fuel and engine managment already turbo friendly......all you need to get it running

Not as much as you'd expect (OHVs), but they're truck engines with good low end torque.

Really doubtful.

I would like to get a 2.9L and maybe turbo it or something.

If you really want something turbo, but know nothing on subject, your greatest chance of success would be swapping in something already turboed.

I don't know if the swap could be completed for $1000 from a Turbo Coupe.. I saw an '88 T/C engine (slightly under 100K), computer, T-5 trans for $900 that I thought wasn't all that bad of a deal. Lots of other little stuff that you don't think about increases the total.

Neither, a 5.0 is better than a re-invented 2.9 A.K.A 4.0

If you don't want to go with the the T-Bird then go 5.0!

I love how somebody delted my responce.....funny it was the only one in support of the 2.9.

I reapproved it; I don't see the slightest thing wrong with it. I might disagree with a minor point or two, but that's not at all a reasonable reason to unapprove a post.

I don't know why it was unapproved, or who did it. It appears to be a classic case of overmoderation, or perhaps a forum bug (it happens).

my ranger gets 15-18 with 33" tires and a 4.0. and i don't see why you couldn't get almost 200hp with a 1,000 dollars in go fast money. but i agree that since you have a 2.3 you should get the turbo 2.3 setup.250 hp is easy on those and 20+ mpg's

4-0 fo sho.

every mod would gain more increase on the bigger brother
