did'nt take pics along the way, but here's a slick cold air intake for a 2.9l ranger, it puts the filter right where your stock air box would be.

parts
Ractive cold air intake for a 1992 honda accord ( it even has a spigit for the vacuum line off the intake manifold!)
2, 3" cold air intake pipe connector(or if your cheap like me, use rubber hose off your stock intake and just cut it with a hack saw so u have a 3" long peice, you will just need 3, 3" gear clamps)

the stock 1992 honda accord cold air intake is shaped like and S, all i did was cut off one end of the "S" and turn it around so the intake was shaped like a "U" and reconnected it with a 3" intake connector (or in my case a piece of the stock intake tube)
then stuck a filer on 1 end and hooked the other to the throttle body, then your vacuum line to the spigit.

and there you have it, i nice little cold air for the 2.9 that keeps it in the same spot as the stock intake, but works way better! I just took the top off the stock air box and left the bottom piece. If you buy the actual intake connectors it would look pretty nice, but i was'nt to worried about that.
Note- the intake comes a bit close to the fan blades on the alternator, its about a 1/2" or so, but mine hasent hit yet and its bin over a year!

The first thing alot of people are going to say is you made a hot air intake due to it sucking in the air above the exhuast manifold.

IMO it looks great and doesnt look like it is in the least bit restricting air flow, ya somebody might jump on that too.

i have this same setup on my 2.9 in my BII. i've had it on there since my senior year of high school (almost 10 years) and had no problems at all.

i used the stock tube and just removed the old air box and all the crap that went with it. yeah it's hot air, but the acceleration on my BII is so much better than it was before.

i just bought a $25 honda air filter from pep boys. they're probably not as nice as K&N, but they are way cheaper and you can clean them too.

glad to see i'm not the only one with great ideas lol

you don't need that vacuum line, its for controlling the heat riser flapper door, all you have there right now is a filtered vacuum leak.

On my 90' it has 2 vac lines going to the air box, what is the other For?

Hot air intake for sure!! All looks, but not functional at all!!

i believe he understands its a hot air intake genius but the fact is he is still getting more air flow than the stock box and it also looks better so yes i believe there is some functioning of this setup.

I believe it has a better ablilty to flow air due to there being less bends in the system. It does look very cool.

The OEM intake isn't limiting the amount of airflow, so you could put a sewer pipe on it for an intake and it wouldn't flow any more air!

So, not only are you NOT getting any more air, the air your getting is HOT (less dense).

Guys! If there is more air/fuel in the combustion chamber the compression ratio will be higher and the engine will clatter... the clatter will be heard by the engines ear...then the timing will be retarded by the computer.. then there goes the fuel milage and power.

NONE of the so-called "cold air intakes" add anything to the performance of the engine! Most if not ALL actually cost power and economy.

Why buy a Ford if you don't trust the Ford engineers knowing what they are doing?

i trust the ford engineers, but they were designing these engines to drive on highways, with stock P205 or P235 tires and stock suspensions.
maybe towing a trailer or carrying a load in the back of a pickup.

like i said, my pep boys "cold air intake" has been on my 88 BII for about 10 years and i've had no problems. i drove it numerous times from raleigh to auburn, alabama (about 475 miles) and didnt have any worse gas mileage than my 2000 explorer.

The only way to get more air/fuel in the compbustion chamber is going to forced induction.

oh well, even if it dosent do that much it looks better than the stock intake IMO

Nice air intake Carson. Actually cold air increases top end high RPM power but warm air increases low end torque and when you increase torque the gas mileage increases. Fuel mixes/atomizes better with warm air so more of it gets used. When I got my Ranger the air box was broken and it needed a new air filter so instead I got a cone type from Autozone for 20 bucks and it clamped onto the stock air tube just fine. Mine has 150,000 + miles and last summer when it was hot I checked my gas milage after several tanks of gas and I was getting 22-23 mpg average. My engine aint in the greatest shape and the only changes from stock are the air filter and a 2 inch glasspack. MPG highway is listed as 23 for my truck new.
