this guy said he has a rebuilt 2.8 w/headers, offy intake, holley 390 carb and about 500 miles on it sitting in his garage. said that it was in his truck but when he sold it the guy didnt want to motor so he pulled it out. asking $600 for it... is that i good deal? should i jump on it?

The offy intake is worth over $500 new.

If it is a 500 mile built engine, $600 is cheap! I might find a way to put the $600 in trust till the engine was running as advertised in my truck. Specially if I didn't know the guy.

It's still a (used) v6, I guess if you want it and are willing to pay for it go for it.

he works at the schucks auto parts store i usually go to. usually sit there and talk to the guys that work up there and one day i mentioned my ranger and thats when he told me about the motor.

I think I would want to hear it run for that price. Although even if the motor is fudged the intake, carb, and headers alone might be worth it. Pull the valve covers off and see if it's clean inside. If it looks like the heads were tanked and had all the stem seals replaced then they at least should be good. That's a pretty good indication the rest of it should be OK as well, but even if not you have good heads for another bottom end.

Well worth it!! Headers for a 2.8 are over $300. The offy intake is over $500 new. A holley 390 goes about $300 or so. If you duraspark it and add a nice exhaust that motor will hum along real nice. Will it be V-8...no way, but not all of us have that access or desire to do that swap. Same thing with a 4.0 liter swap. So in that case pumping up that 2.8 is a very viable option. You could add a nice cam also before putting it in and get even more power! If you can't hear it run try and get some background on who did the rebuild to see what was done as well as their reputation.

Kinna makes me sick thinking about it. I bought my truck for $200 put two fenders, grill ,radiator, bumper, engine from the bone yard I paid $750 actually after the first two engines one with a loud knock and the second wouldn`t turn they delivered the third from a fire all the wires and vacuum lines were melted to the top of the engine I said F it and put it in cause the guy wouldn`t give me the money back and he wanted $850 for it but I said no way give me a motor (getting ready to go postal). I have been running this motor for about 5 yrs now and especially after the guide seals and duraspark she runs just fine. Good oil pressure since I went with the motorcraft filter and synthetic oil. I still feel ripped for paying that price for the engine. My opinion if it dont have a custom grind cam for the oversize intake check the compression and leakdown dumping that much fuel in the cylinders will destroy rings from unburnt fuel washing down into the crankcase and thinning the oil and 500 miles of that can destroy the bearings also. It might be OK but you will not know untill you get it running. I personally wouldnt pay that much unless you know he will make it right If the engine is shot.

i agree... im in the navy and dont really have the time for a big swap like a v8 or 4.0. i know the guy that built it, he told me if it didnt run that we could take it back out. so i bought it... cleaned the intake up, sand blasted and painted the headers, took the heads off. havent put it in yet still got some more cleaning and checking out to do. the heads look like they have been ported, looks like the springs and valve stem seals are new. came with a aluminum cam gear, mallory distributor(non vac advance) headers, holley 390, offy intake. didnt have the cam in it but he said as soon as he finds it i can come get it if i wanted it.

mallory distributor(non vac advance)
That's a $475 distributor by itself! I'd say you got a good deal on that one.

I'd love to see what that monster could do unleashed.
