I have a 1996 ford ranger with a 2.3, 3.73 gears in the rear, 5 speed manual and I'm going to get 33x12.5's and I'm going to run it stock like that until I get 4.10's with a limited slip.

Am I crazy or can it be done for a little while?

I am well aware that it will be a DOG and will suck but oh well...

I just want to know if I can even do it...

It will do it.... but don’t use 5th gear

Will be hard on the clutch to get you rolling.

Calculator here, bottom one: http://www.csgnetwork.com/multirpmcalc.html

Your trans uses these ratios 3.72 / 2.20 / 1.50 / 1.00 / 0.79

1996 2.3l Lima has best torque(power) at 2,400RPMs

At 65mph in 4th you would be at 2,400rpm, in OD(.79 ratio), 1,900rpm so unless road is downhill it won't maintain speed very well, no it won't "pop out" of 5th

In 1st at 10mph you are at 1,400rpm, so you won't be winning many drag races :)

With 33" tires you may want to go with 4.56 instead of 4.10
27" tires and 3.73 is the same as 33" with 4.56

So truck would drive the same as stock except for the added rolling weight of the larger tires, make sure brakes are in good condition heavier tires can wear out brakes faster

My thinking behind 4.10 gears is that I can pick them up at the jy for $30 so then I don't have to drop $200-$400 on gears and then I'll still have an open diff too.

I'm going to get a $1000 f150 with a 302 and drop that in my ranger one day too so it wont be the 2.3 for more than a couple years.

spend the extra dough on 4:33 or 4:56 and you wont be fighting burned clutches every 5000 miles

Well I got 31x10.5 tires, some cheap ones, not gonna be on there for super long, maybe a year or two until I can get a v8 or a bigger truck. Money for a lift is being saved.

It's fine, actually calmed down first gear and it rides better too. Its not bad on the clutch either, almost the same as without.

410 is perfect for 31"
