I just bought a 88' ranger with the 2.3 in it. The truck was running 2 weeks before I bought it but now it is not. I have checked the resistance on the coil and the resistance is .9 ohms so it is good. I also replaced the ignition module last night and still no fire. What else could be wrong? Thank you for your time and help!

Thanks,
Mike Jones

have you pulled it apart to have a look? not too much to go wrong with old fashioned systems :D i hate all this new computerized b.s.

That's because you don't understand it!!!

To the OP, pull the distributer cap off, watching the rotor while you crank it.
If the rotor doesn't move, you have lost your timing belt. Not a problem, because your engine is a non-interference engine, meaning you valves won't
hit the pistons if you loose your timing belt.

I can see the timing belt and it is fine. Does this truck have something else besides the ignition module that gives power to the coil? How do I check the wires going to the coil? Thanks for your help.

The ignition module grounds one side of the coil, very similar to the old "points" type of ignition. You still have to have 12V to the coil positive terminal, if you turn the ignition to the "run" position, do you have 12V there?

If you pull the coil wire out of the distributer, do you have spark there? If you do, look for carbon tracks in the distributer cap, and rotor.

wow you really have a lot of time on your hands haha. Of course i asked for help here, but i figured most of the problems out by myself of with my dads help. it's hard for people to diagnose things over the internet.

But guess what I have learned alot along the way thanks to many other members of this forum... not you so much. I want to tell you a story my granpa told me...

A driver hit an overpass on the freeway with his 18-wheeler and was stuck pretty good. He was scratching his head along with CHP officers and other bystanders tyring to figure out how to get his rig out. Along comes a man with his 5 year old son, and the kids asks, "why don't they just let the air out of the tires?". Well they let the air out of the tires and whatdaya know, he drove it out.

Moral of the story is even the person you think might be the dumbest guy in the world can teach you something. Just because you're older than most of the other members does't mean you have to be an arrogant jackass all of the time. Theres a difference between trying to help and just being a know-it-all. You don't have to belittle people to show how smart you are.

Sludge summed it up pretty well about you:

"id be more likely to call you an idiot if you WERENT installing it for just the sound"

Hopefully you will out-grow this kind of novelty one day (or year)!

And you sure won't get any help from me in screwing up a vehicle like you try hard to do!

haha nice mis-quote. My vehicle is in 10x better running and looking condition now than it was when i got it. you can say whatever you want about me i really don't care. And the kind of 'help' you give is the kind i don't need. Wick has helped me with quite a few things. He's one of the guys on here that is pretty knowlegeable but dosen't have to rub it in your face to help. That's the kind of guys that help this community.
