My timing belt broke while I was driving down the expressway..anyway I towed my truck to a mechanic to replace the belt ..did so and truck still won't turn on keeps cranking but won't start checked timing numerously mechanic said I have no compression .he said I need another motor its a 2.3 liter 4 banger 5 speed manual tranny I've priced around and the cheapest I found was 400.00 used and 250.00 for install.I don't know what to do guys please help

Before you replace the motor, pull the head off and see if you have any bent valves.

If there arent any bent ones, chances are you are 180 degrees out. Take your timing belt off and turn the crank one turn and reset.

Either way......start there.

Personally, Id turn the crank 1st, then pull the head.

wont be any bent valves, it's not an interference engine

I agree with the timing belt being out of alignment though...

it's the cam that determines what stroke the crank is on.
the cam and distributor have to be on the same stroke,
the crank just has to be in time.

So I should tell him not to pull it out .. how can I check to see if any valves are shot I'm no mechanic I just don't wanna drop 650 on something I don't need .. he said there wasn't any compression when he crancked the motor .. like I said I don't know if it makes any difference but the motor cranks really fast but just doesn't turn on have gas have spark please help he wants to pull the motor today wed. The 7th .. I hav e no idea what to do I'm really stressin out I'm missing work I'm stranded and I don't feel like gettin effed anything or any ideas will hel

ok is this a mechanic you trust or know personally is he certified.. sounds like he is just tryin to jew you for money... like has been stated your 180 out cause these motors are not an interference motor which mean if your break or jump time nothing should be hurt... now unless your head gasket has blown which sometimes can happen when the valves are closed and the piston shoves air into the cylinder and it has nowhere to go... so you got 2 choices spend the 700 bucks and put a used motor in it... or check the timing your self you can find pictures of how it goes everywhere then have him do a compression test in front of you and see how many cylinders do not have compression... its hard to believe that all of them have lost it... if their are 2 side by side then theirs where the gasket is messed up..if that is the problem... but still it should be cheaper than the motor he wants to put in

I don't know him a friend recommended him but I just spoke to another friends father that said its the crank on the bottom the one that has the sprocket ..well he said that there's a wedge on the cam that moves in and out if u don't set the sproket on it right the belt will move but the cam won't spin so its completely off timing any ideas guys?

The "mechanic" you picked needs to return to his original occupation.....bagging groceries. He obviously ain't no mechanic.

Get it to another garage. If it was running ok before it broke the belt there is nothing to prevent it from running the same,no interference motor. It might of broke the crank sensor when the belt broke. They are such a simple setup and if he can't get it running, take it out of there.

I agree with everyone thus far partner. If he is telling you that you have no compression, then you are 180 degress off time...meaing it wont run. There should be no sprockets on your timing belt...just pulleys. Tow it out of there and either retime it yourself or take it to someone who can properly time it. Should take an hour at the most and wont cost much.

I would cut your losses and move the truck. The 180 degrees out of time mistake can be made but should be easily corrected as the timing belt and pullies are not hard to get to.

that or the crank sensor behind the crank balancer got busted when the belt broken...

check the belt first

Well it got fixed cut my losses paid that dum ass mechanic and found another mechanic that laughed and fixed my prob in 2 hrs for 160 labor truck runs better and i think i found a new trusted mechanic but all in all thank you guys
