I have stock gearing in my 92 2.3 ranger. I want to change the gears to give me more bottom end power. I have no idea where to look or what to get

i would run atleast a 3.73 or 4.11 depending on if its auto or 5speed ..

"stock gearing" is actually kinda vague as the factory didn't just
make them with ONE ratio...

WHICH ratio do you have now?

AD

Im not sure which gearing it is but its a 5 speed

ok ill look it up in the morning and let you know.
thanks

I got 4.10s in my 1990 2.3 4x4 5 speed truck. On 235s, its a nice ride, on 31s, its a nice trail truck but you won't win any races. And on 33s, I guess I won't get much highway drivng done...

3.45 is probably the most common for a 2.3 5sp.

next likely is 3.73.

I've seen only four or five 2.3's with 4.10s and they all had
one thing in common... they were all 4x4 gen 2 trucks

I have a 97 2.3L auto with the 4.10 ratio from the factory. The tires that were on it (205/70/14) when I bought it were smaller than the stock (225/70/14) and it did ok. Since then I am running 235/75/15 and it is still ok for power on the interstate at speed (65mph), but in town and driving on the hills near me a deeper ratio would be better.

For my engine size/tranny/tire size/terrain I think I would be happier with at least 4.56 ratio if not 4.88

We need to know what size tires you're running on it too in order to be able to make a worthwhile recommendation.

I've got a '95 2.3L 4x4 5spd, that came with 4.10's from the factory. It called for 215/75-15's for the stock size, it had 235's on it when I bought it, so thats what I was used to driving it with, and I replaced the 235's with 30x9.5's those seemed to dog it down a little when you let the clutch out, but once you got moving it was ok, but on the highway doing 70-75 it was singing a nasty 4500 rpm's. Needless to say, it liked the gas stations.

There's no way it was doing anything close to 4500 RPMs at 75MPH...

Ok, you'll have to forgive me, it might not have been 4500. It's been over a year since that truck has even seen the road, but I do remember it was screaming for that speed.

I wouldn't call 2800 RPM screaming.. Remember, unless your speedo was corrected, you were going faster than 70-75MPH too.

I have factory 4.10s in mine and 30 x 9.5 tires. I can do about 65 at 2500 RPM. Its really not too bad. But being 4wd, the power to weight ratio is still depressing. I am not going to change my gearing, I really like it. I am going to look in the power department. I have pondered getting a second cylinder head to play with. I'd like to cam it and port and polish. Little off topic, but in the end, I like the 4.10s.
