2.3l DIS engine has intermittent loss of power under load. Engine starts and idles no problem. Engine will run fine for a period of time and then backfires and shuts down. This can happen at low or highway speeds Engine will restart and idle but may stall immeniately due to backfire or go for a number of miles before it stalls out.

Items done to correct problem: New plugs and wires, fuel filter, DIS module, and Right hand coil pack. Coil pack is latest replacement and codes 222 and 223 are present with a KOEO test

Need help

Not familiar with KOEO test but here's my thoughts:

Backfiring is usually attributed to timing problems or valves hanging open when they should be closed. Exhaust valve allowing fire to enter exhaust system can cause a backfire but I would think one exhaust valve bent or burned or cruddy enough to hang up would not shut the engine down.

Does it seem the problem goes away once it cools down?

Condition does not appear to be burnt or hanging valves. This condition comes and goes. At times the engine runs as it should. When the event happens it is so severe it stops the engine. Engine will restart and sometimes it performs fine other times it will stall right away.

Next time it dies, coast to a stop and see if fuel pressure is still good by pressing in the schraeder valve on the fuel rail.

Do this before turning the key off.

At least you'll know whether you are losing fuel pressure or spark.

Mine was doing the same thing. Found out that my fuel pressure was low. Replaced the fuel pump and runs perfect now.

When you determined it was the fuel pump was the computer setting any codes? The codes I have been receiving are all associated with the DIS system.

Yeah now that I think of it I was getting a lean condition code.
