hey wanna put an exhaust on my 2.3... i dont want a ricey sound and i dont feel like experimenting with different pipes. so whos got a muffler that has a nice growl to it that isnt too loud??

i have a magnaflow single indual out 2 1/4in thats not too loud and doesnt drone in the cab. its dumped out lightening style. but no matter what you do its going to sound a little ricey because of the engine design.

X2, These motors are what they are, rev-happy 16v DOHC four-bangers, so there's going to be a little bit of rice no matter what you do.

For what it's worth, I'm using a 2 1/4" si/so Dynomax ultra-flo "race bullet" with a side-exit right before the rear tire and like how it sounds. It's not stupid-loud (like a straight-piped v8) but has a good tone to it. Still, it's a little ricey, but not nearly as bad as the fart-canned civics running all over the place around here.

I agree with the other folks who have posted. It will sound like a 4cyl. Nothing will change that. BUT...I put a Flowmaster 40 series Delta Flow muffler on mine, changed up the air intake (modded air box, air box muffler removed, Spectre tubing from MAF to throttle body) and the sound it really mellow until WOT. It definitely doesn't sound like your typical 4cyl.

on my 97 2.3 i have 2-1/4 inch pipe from the cat, to a cherry bomb glasspack, and the stock pipe over the axle, into a 2-1/4 in, 4 inch out import muffler
Believe it or not, with this combo of a glasspack and big "can" muffler, the tone is reaallly deep at idle, and at WOT it isnt ricey, when downshifting, it has that "rumble" like when downshifting a small block :) ill try to get a video sometime
BTW my exhaust is all welded too, no u clamps....because they suck lol

i have ran a few different set ups wit my duratec..

1. flow master after the cat(s) with 3" pipe exiting before the right rear tire
-deep tone at idle, loud as hell @ wot, lots of drone in the cab

2. same flowmaster but a 2.25" pipe turn down.
-quieted down a bit with the smaller pipe but still the dam drone

3.(CURRENT SET UP) reduced pipe size (from stock 2.5 to 2.25) from the cat to my new magnaflow and am running 2.25 from the muff all the way out behind the rear tire
-pretty quiet at idle, sounds bitchen revving up to 3k anything above gets ricy just like anything on a duratec. pretty loud at wot. but i got rid of the drone and still have a pretty good soundin truck
