Bought this 1988 Ranger 2.3 EFI this past week. Everything was going well until Saturday. Saturday morning it started within a second. Headed into town to catch Olympic festivities and it died on the highway.

Did a search and ended up replacing the TFI and the Ignition Coil.

Still won't start.

I have fuel at the rail, at least i sprayed fuel every where when the key was turned on.

Not sure what to do next.

Any and all help appreciated.

Regards

Sean

check the eec relay on the fender well by the battery next to the fuel pump relay

check the timing belt, my bet is it broke...

Put the crankshaft at TDC per the timing marks on the front cover. Pull the plastic plug out of the cover and check that the camshaft sprocket has the little triangle by the pointer. If it does, your valve timing is likely OK.
Do you get sparks? If you remove the large wire from the coil and put a plug wire in there, and put a plug in the other end, ground the plug body. Crank over to see if you get spark.
Remove the air intake tube from the throttle, open the throttle and spray some WD-40 into the intake. Crank, and if it fires, you have a lack of fuel or lack of pulses to operate the injectors.

Timing Belt is still there. But I will confirm the timing. I will confirm I have spark and will jumper the eec relay. and will throw some wd 40 into the intake to see what happens.

Thanks for the input.

jumps starter selenoid attachement fenders whit keys on and wire touch

did you just look at the belt thu the peep hole in the front cover? or did you poke it with your finger?

some times the belt will just strip the teeth of the belt at the crank gear...

how dose it sound when you crank it over? a bit too fast?

also are you getting spark?
even tho the TFI has been replaced.. the PIP signal may not be there... the pip is inside the dizzy, its the block looking thing mounted to the inside wall of the dizzy, pop your cap off and look. some times when they go bad they swell and pop

It cranks over ok.

I am not getting any spark.

I checked and have power at the ignition coil.

I will pop the distributor cap off and have a look for at the pip.

tks for the help.

in the tech library under TFI troubleshooting it will show you what pin to test for power from the ignition with the key on. if your getting power to the TFI then it would be either the coil or ignition module. do you have a vom to test your coil use the tech library if you dont have a repair manual

Did you scroll all the way down to the old troubleshooting procedures #4 shows you how to test the coil first then go to the TFI module if it tests good then do the pickup coil last. It tells you how to test for power first then troubleshoot the components.

put a spark plug in the coil wire from the distributor and set on a good ground turn the key on and touch a jumper wire to the neg term on the coil to a good ground every time you touch it you should get a spark

I just tried it on mine and didn`t work humm just trying to figure out what they mean it is kinna sparce the way they describe it but i did get a spark on the wire i touched shows the hot goes thru the coil i just thought it would fire the plug

Yes.

I had power at the connector to the TFI. I was able to spark a plug hooked up to the Coil by grounding out the coil negative terminal on the TFI connector.

The TFI ohms out perfectly.

Ipso facto the PIP.

Still makes me nervous to spend more frickin $$ without being able to test. :(
