1998 Ranger, I need a motor!

Hi guys, first time owner of something other than an 80's Volvo. Picked this up for $400, 1998 extended cab, 3.0 with a newly rebuilt manual transmission and 4X4. The motor has a real nasty knock. I'm currently on the hunt to replace the 3.0. I'm considering the 4.0's as well but I'm unsure if the bellhousing will mate to the transmission. I definitely want to keep the transmission. Any advice is greatly appreciated!

4.0 will require transmission (bell is different), motormounts, wiring harness, and ECM.

With a 3.0 youre pretty much stuck with it.
