1996 Ranger won't crank intermittently

Hey guys,

These forums are awesome! I searched the forums, but I haven't seen my exact problem described by anyone else.

For years, my 96 Ford Ranger with a 3.0 won't crank the first time I turn the ignition key. When this happens I hear the door locks click for some reason. If I release the key and turn it again, the truck starts fine.

The problem is now getting worse. It happens almost daily and I have to turn the key 2 or 3 times before it will crank.

When it cranks, it immediately starts.

Initially I was thinking it was the ignition switch, but now I'm wondering if it is something in the starter circuit.

Do you guys have any ideas how to isolate the problem?

never heard of that one. sounds like you might have a flat spot in the starter, and when you draw the power it shoots feedback to the rest of the electrical system. id bench test your starter as its easy and free.

Hook a test light between ground and the starter trigger wire. If it lights up every time, get a starter. If it doesn't light even one time, get a switch.

Most likely the starter, if I had to bet.

Before you get in the truck to start it, smack the starter case with a large screwdriver handle. If it's worn brushes, as I suspect, rapping on it will make it work more consistently.

If you're unable to crawl under to rap it, yours should be accessible from under the hood, just ram it with a broom handle like you would on a pool cue (break).

If you have a clutch, remember that the clutch pedal switch is part of that circuit, between the key and the solenoid. If you have an automatic, see if wiggling the shifter or using Neutral for starting has any positive effect.

It's also common for the large gauge hot wire to the starter to go bad, typically corroding under the insulation.

Before you do any starter removal, DISCONNECT THE BATTERY.
