So I did a 5 speed swap in my 96 ranger for obvious reasons. Not all swaps are the same and I’m learning that now. I normally would have a whole donor truck, but this time I don’t… so I ended up sourcing parts from a few other sources.
The truck has the 4.0, and the manual shift 1354 stock.
The new (5 speed) transmission is from a 99 ranger, pcm is from a 1996 explorer (manual), the engine wiring harness is the stock harness from the truck, the starter is from the same truck the transmission was removed from. (99 ranger)
Now the swap is done and all buttoned up, but I can’t start the truck with the key, instead I am turning the truck on and jumping the solenoid and it fires right up… maybe I should grab an engine harness from a manual ranger? I do have the transmission harness and it’s also all plugged up with no chafed wires either… Reverse lights do not work either…
Second issue is the temp gage doesn’t work and nor does the speedometer or the odometer. The speedo and odometer was an intermittent issue prior to the swap so I’m not sure if that may have anything to do with it…. My biggest question is… should I go try to track down an engine harness from a 96/97 ranger and swap it all out? Or am I missing something? I hate to sound like a moron but I’ve done these swaps before and this one has me stumped… I’ve already put a drill on the speed sensor with the key on and my son said the needle never moved. Does have an abs light though? I don’t know I’m just grasping at straws at this point…. Any input is greatly appreciated

Look at the wiring going to the transmission Originally you had a pink wire going to the automatic, that went to the neutral safety switch, and then leaving the neutral safety is was red/lightblue stripe. This came back up and went to the starter solenoid/relay. You lost this with the manual, it has no neutral safety.

When I did this on a f250 and used the proper manual harness, it was plug and play. The manual harness had a small jumper wire taped in the harness near the plug that jumped out these two starter wires to keep the circuit going, since the manual did not have a neutral safety. Apparently in your harness swaps, something has changed and now you do not have this wiring. You might want to plug the automatic harness back in, find these two wires and jump them yourself. You would also have to find the reverse light wires and splice them into the switch for the manual transmission also.

Here's a diagram. You can see the manual side of the wiring has a lot of connections and jumpers in it.

That's what I did cause at the time I couldn't find a manual sub-harness. It was pretty easy. Really only four wires ya need to be concerned with.

Thanks man! I’ll look at that for sure on Monday. I’m really racking my brain on the speedometer/odometer….

We pulled the harness and made one and now the speedo works, and the tach too obviously. Starts with the key, and also has reverse lights! You’re awesome man!
