Howdy y'all I have a 1996 Ford ranger 4.0 ohv and it currently has flow master super 10 dual exhaust. I'm wanting to redo my exhaust in 2.5 duals instead of 2 inch. Im currently looking at flow master super 40 and the regular 40 series. Truck has no cats. Wondering what y'all options are and suggestions

Soo…

No cats are Federally illegal… and prohibited discussion on here. Universal “high flow” cats are acceptable.

They don’t harm performance unless they’re plugged…

They DO harm performance if they’re not there…

A 4.0 is not powerful enough to flow enough air to need 2.5” duals and you will probably lose power with that…

If you want true duals, you need to be down around a 1-7/8”-2” and even that might be a bit much without engine work. You will need an X or H pipe or a crossover muffler for true duals as well.

If you want the look of duals, a single 2.5” back to a single in/dual out 2”muffler would be what you want.

Personally, I like the Flowmaster 40 series but I haven’t tried the super 40 or the 44. I’m not a fan of the 10 series.

Yeah.. 2" true duals will support over 2x the power that motor makes with zero loss. Id probably spend the money elsewhere..

Stock 2.25 single is enough to keep a 4.0 OHV engine from having continuous flow (above atmospheric) at idle. It pulls air back in (at a leak) between strokes and messes with the O2

I have Street Flow mufflers which are Flowmaster knockoffs at 1/2 the price on my Explorer and one of my Rangers. I believe they are equivalent to a 40 series. I am really happy with the sound and noise level - can't tell you how many people have asked "do you have a V8 in that thing??"

I ran one of them without a cat for a brief period of time while I was waiting on parts and honestly I prefer the noise level WITH the cat in place...it really cuts down on the "droning" noise at certain RPM's. So my recommendation would be to follow federal law and keep the cats... mostly because it sounds better though.
