Alright, so my uncle has a 94 SHO automatic and the car wont go into drive but he still has low and reverse. My question is, is there something electronic that would cause this or is the tranny just shot?

I know the motor has high miles but the tranny was replaced. Another question is, does the SHO have specific transmissions or no? Like could I get a transmision from any taurus or does it have to be from an SHO?

Transmission is SHO specific for 93-95 Taurus SHO's.

The trans is toast, Period. (I've owned 6 SHO taurii of various years)

Even if it is something electric, it would probably have to come out, and rebuilt units do not often last long.

Known common failure point, sorry chief :(

Thanks for the info though, he ended up selling the car. I want to get an SHO mtx but my gf says they are "for old men" because they are a taurus but i love stock sleepers, SHO, grand national, i just love them lol

No, all transmissions for the SHO are not specific to SHO only applications in all cases.
In 94' they came with 3.0L in the SHO package as well as the 3.2L SHO package.
Both 3.0L and 3.2L SHO packages offered automatic and manual transmissions. The 3.0L SHO automatic transmissions were not specific to SHO only packages. They were merely stock AX4N's and AX4S's.
The 3.2L's however may well have been application specific to SHO seeing as how the 3.2L is a DOHC Yamaha engine.
The manual transmissions on the 3.0L were show specific but only because you needed the hardware and center console from a SHO. Near direct swap parts though with a little modding to the trans hump for the shifter.

If you happen on a Yamaha V8 powered SHO pass on it.. unless you plan on immediately welding the cam gears in place on the cam shafts as soon as you buy it.
The cam sprockets were swaged in place of bolting and are 100% guaranteed to walk right off the end of the cam shaft. When that happens the valves will drop, smack a piston and the entire engine become a giant paper weight. Thats why you NEVER buy a Yamaha V8 powered Taurus in non running condition. ;)
