my wife said her car was starting to move like a dog the last week but once it built up speed it was fine. so i am like wtf what in the hell are you talking about. I test drive it and discover it starts out in 2nd gear. so i drive it probably 1/8th of a mile and back home and find that when i put it in all the way over to first i get it to feel right and 1st works so i think the tranny its self is ok.

no cel light, but i pull the codes any way and only get vacuum leak codes

. i dont hardly drive the damn thing so i dont know how it acts. i guess what i am asking is what should be my next step in figuring out what is wrong.

codes i am looking at are 22. 64. 56. 46. 76. 48. none of them should cause the 1st gear to not work at all unless i manually put it in first?

i have a guy saying @ tcca to fix the maf codes and it will fix it. i am calling bs.

Is it a ax4s or ax4n? I know with the 96+ ones that the Transmission Range Sensor was a common failing item, not sure about 95 and older though. This may sound weird but does the radio sound, power steering or power windows not work when in Reverse? A failing VSS could also make it shift funky.

nah the only thing it is doing is making the transmission selector be all the way in 1st to use that gear. also it is possible the code are not 2 digit but three digit

22. 645. 646. 647. 648 and those are trans codes the nearest i can tell. but since it can move under all gears regardless where the gear indicator is i am 95% certain i do not need to pull the tranny.

i also wanna drive my ranger and not my wife.

It will output 3 digit codes. I would recommend doing the self tests again with this in mind.

ran the car today looked at the transmission fluid before i started it up real high like it is supposed to. then i looked at after it idled for 5 minutes and it is in the range it should be in.

I've had 3 EEC-IV systems that I can think of that output 3 digit codes and I can't recall it ever pulling a code 22 or any 2 digit code. Seems strange.

transmission shop said he got the same 645-648 codes and a tps code. said the trans was slipping. i didnt feel it slipping yesterday when i drove it a mile. it just didnt have first gear. if i can get this confirmed then i will part it out. then get a crown vic,or a marquis. scratch that on my way home i felt it slipping just a bit..... looks like i may part it out and have a spare engine for my truck grrrrrrrrrrrr.
