Hey Guys,
I am wanting to change the shifter nob in my '94 Ranger. However, I cannot seem to get the freaking thing off.. any suggestions/ proven methods?!

Thanks

Pull

Really hard!

I don't know about yours, but mine did not have a set screw...

Heat it with a heat gun or hair dryer. Then wrap it with a cloth and pull like hell.

Just watch out because when it comes off you will punch yourself...

He says this because he did it himself...

I just had the funniest image of that happening in my head!! Hahaha!!

Just a stupid question, did you pry the cap off the center of the knob? I was looking into it and didn't realize that there was a cap on top of the shift knob and there "should" be a screw under that. (rattles like hell so I could see why someone would JB weld it)

Knobs in the rangers are just press fitted. The center cap does not need to come off to get the knob off. There is no screw under it.

Many times on a nice hot day (granted this IS winter) when my truck had been sitting out in the sun for a while, when I would drive it, going from first to second or third to fourth the shifter would just come off. As previously stated they are just press fitted on (unless of course someone has jb welded it) so it should just slip off. The shaft is splined and the knob just slips over it.

ya my truck does the same thing ill be shifting from first to second ill rip the knob off and like thro it behind the seat sometimes cuz im never expecting it to happen but i want to take my 4x4 shifter knob off but it wont come off either i have used a heat gun an i donnt want to melt it or anything but it just wont come off

My Transfer Case knob comes off a lot easier than the Transmission.

But then again, I used to have a push button 4WD system, so the knob has not been on there for 20 years.

get a pair of vice grips....clamp knob......twist...done!!!

the good news is that you wont punch yourself in the nose!!!

Bad news is you tear the hell out of the knob.

lmao mine comes off like everyday till some super glue fixed that problem
