1994 Ranger Shifter

Yay for searching rather than starting a new thread.

One answer I couldnt find is how to attach a new shifter.

My truck has 270k miles and the shifter is totally loose and the grooves on the shift leaver are warn pretty much off (the knob will freely spin).

Im just going to have to make a good choice and glue it arnt I?

I was thinking that I may be able to find an 'adapter' of sorts. Find somthing that has the threads for a shift knob and adapt/modify it to fit on (and be glued) to the top of the shift leaver. This would allow for different knobs to be used in the future. But I have no idea if even such a threaded piece exsists. Prob just have to glue it.

Unless you really like the OE Ranger knob I'd say find an aftermarket knob you like there not expensive.

After you're done reading that.....you'll see how easy it is to....

Remove the whole shifter from the base, clamp it in a vise, making sure to clamp the part of the shaft that the boot will hide, and whack the old knob off without smackin' yourself in the head. I'd use an open end wrench just big enough to seat on the knob and whack the wrench. Propane torch on the shaft as necessary to overcome the JB Weld, if that was used.

If i read it right his problem is the knob not the shifter bushings, but a lose knob.

it is the knob and its already off...

So if I read right... the only way to put on a new knob is to glue it on.

If it is an OE knob just try to push/ press it on, and if it is lose then you can use a little glue or silicone, if it is an aftermarket knob there should be set-screws on/ in it.

I would take some small slivers of wood, ie: toothpicks and wedge between the shifter knob and the shaft. It will work the same way they do when you repair a stripped out screw hole in a wood door frame.

At least this way you will know it isin't glued on.
