I went to start my ranger last night and the starter would engage briefly then just spin. i tried a couple of time over an hours time, with the same result. Then i went to start it the next morning and it starter up but stuttered alittle at first. I was pretty sure it was the starter when i read a post almost exactly like mine, even ordered a new one. Then i went to start it this morning and it ran just fine. I have herd that some people found the 2 of thier cylinders were in the wrong firing order and im wondering if mine are as well. how do i test this?
i used the firing order i found in the tech library when i did a tune up a couple days ago. need to know if i should return starter or not. any help would be great. THX

Did this problem start after you did the tune up?

So using the diagram in the tech library (the one that shows the coils and which cylinder they should connect to) you traced all your wires and verified that they are correct?

If you are sure the wires are correct, then try the new starter.

sounds like the starter, or flywheel. does it make a horrible grinding noise?

Sounds like a bad starter, solenoid or starter dive gear. Pull the starter and replace it.
