I know this is a repeat topic but i have some other questions.

I have a 1994 supercab 2wd with A4LD transmission. But I've always wanted a manual transmission. I was wondering if i could get this done in a shop(and how much it would cost). I'd do it myself but i'm 17 and dont have a lot of tools or knowledge about this. and i cant afford to screwup and have my truck out of commission for a long time. any help would be appriciated.

P.S. this is my first post of any kind

I would estimate it would cost about $800-$1000 in labor alone (that is an estimate of on average $80 an hour and a time frame of 10-12 hours to do the job). Then you would be looking at another $700-$1000 in parts.

I would estimate a shop to do the work and you provide the parts to be around $2000-$2500; not worth it for a shop to do the work.

I say if you really want a manual, sell your truck and buy one if you can't do it.

I agree. Most of the time it is not "cost effective" for a shop to do the labor for a auto-to-manual swap. Having done more swaps than i care to count, i've still had to turn down some jobs because the truck in question simply isn't worth the cost or effort.

And personally, I would say 10-12 hours for a complete swap including wiring, column, pedals, etc.... to be a pretty conservative figure (from a shops point of view) although, I certainly don't charge $80 an hour. Hell....if I could charge that, I could take an early retirement........

So in essence, to have a shop supply parts and labor for this swap into a 14 year-old 2wd truck, would likely exceed the actual value of the truck, regardless of it's condition.

Although your skills may be limited, and you don't want much downtime, this may be a good opportunity for you to tackle this swap and "learn" more about the truck you obviously plan to keep for a while. Once you have the parts all lined up, there's no reason why you and a friend couldn't accomplish it in a weekend.

The truck still isn't worth paying a shop to swap in the transmission.
