I hope everyone is doing good on here, some of you may remember my post last fall when I first got this truck, but if not I'll make this quick.

The truck is a 93 with the 3.0 Vulcan and 5-speed. It was sitting for many years and was gifted to me last fall and since then I have been making it daily driver friendly.

So far I've replaced a lot and she's been running good, however, I did attempt to spin the tires on some wet ground (yes I know, I regret it). After doing so I believe I have destroyed my clutch, it only engages at the very top end and you have to rev up high to make it move in 1st or 2nd.

I will fix it, I consider myself mechanically savvy, but don't have a garage so projects like this are a little more painful. Should I pay a mechanic to fix it? Or would it be worth my money to get my hands dirty. Also if I do it myself what would I need besides; jack, stands, ramps and a standard set of wrenches?

Any tips or advice is great, you guys helped me out a ton last fall hoping for some advice today. Thanks!

I converted my 89 Ranger from auto to Mazda 5 speed manual trans in my driveway without any help (other than TRS members, which was a critical factor in my success). I was retired when tackling this project so I'm sure you can do it too. Changing the clutch, pressure plate, and throw-out bearing is way easier than going from auto to manual. Good luck.

Great! That's what I was looking for. I'll get a manual and research it just glad to know it's feasible. I'm not new to shade tree mechanical work, just new to Rangers.

Thanks!

Nice rig. I have a '93. Rangers are pretty simple, sturdy rigs to work on. Especially 2WD models.

I paid the local independent shop $200 to do the clutch on mine. Its a PIA. I buy the parts (autozone, lifetime guaranty), anyhow while its out make sure to replace the master and slave cylinders, dont do 1 as the other will soon follow. Again I used the autozone ones as they now have lifetime. I have replaced the clutch 3 time or so as I had trans issues and since it was out they replaced the clutch no questions. I also installed one of their flywheels and it also made a difference, but the truck had 300000+ on it at the time. Flywheel had been resurfaced a couple of times so a new one was ordered. BTW I smoked it good when trying to move a loaded dump trailer and got stuck in a sand pile. Still holding up. Also If you decide to do by yourself, I found that having 2 rods about 18 inches long to let the trans slide on makes removal install easier. get a couple of steel rods and have them threaded on the end as appropriate. I posted some time back how to bleed the master once installed and I think its still in the tech section, basically you pull the rod to the master to let the air out.

Dont know your tool situation but I needed a 24 inch extension to reach the top bolts from below. Got some universal sockets from sears and that also helps. Dont know if Harbor freight has them but they do help. BTW mine is a 4.0 so dont know if the 3.0 is the same but they should be similar.

Great advice, as long as there aren't any specific tools for the job I think I'll be set. Should I look at doing anything to my flywheel while it's torn down? Trucks got 160k.

I pulled mine while I was in there and had it turned

I'd recommend it, while you're that far in

I replaced the clutch pilot bearing too
